Google Android Tablet Imminent

I agree that OSX would be better because it's much more flexible, but it's still a big risk to take. You and I aren't like the average Jane and Joe who may want the comfort and simplicity of the App Store.

I think WAY too much is made of the iPad's ease of use. On my tm2 TabletPC I click on a program icon to run it. Way easier on the iPad. Not.

Sure Windows is more complicated, afterall it's more than a big phone but 10% of ALL computers run Windows 7 so that's 100 million people that should be able pick up a Windows 7 touchscreen device and be at home in no time.

Indeed. It's not a phone, where the desktop interface is what made MS so uncompetitive for so long. It's a laptop with no physical keyboard. There's plenty of room in the market for that.

Dell has a swivel tablet netbook already, I believe. Panny has the touch screen toughbooks.

I don't disagree with any of that. Sadly apple caters to the truly stupid more often than not.

I mean no slight to those who buy into iPhones and such. I only meant those who wants everything handed to them on a silver platter with no work done on their part whatsoever.

Perhaps Apple will listen to their consumers and release an OSX version of iPad but I'm not holding my breath. This is where Microsoft will shine.

I think that there will be a pretty good market for these devices but I guess no one really knows which approach will be more successful, the phone OS on a big screen or a desktop OS. There are advantages to either.

The iPad is lighter and has better battery life than my TPC but then it also can print to any printer and play Flash video among other things.

Something that made me chuckle the other day was a list of the top 10 apps for the iPad, 9 of which exist for Windows and work well on TPCs or have functional equivalents. The only thing that wasn't available to Windows is that slick looking Elements app which I will be more than happy to buy once it's available for Windows.

I hope so.

Even though I am an engineer, I am a vain engineer and like my electronics to look sleek too...

I am hoping for a nice looking tablet, with an Atom, and a full integrated desktop environment...

Does anyone know if Android has the ability to be expanded into an OS that at least has some desktop capabilities? Would be pretty sweet if the Google tablet could run some Linux programs.

I'm sure it could but the HP Slate would probably be a better machine to tinker with as its little more than a PC to begin with.

No tablet without a pen really interests me. Handwriting recognition in Windows 7 is not only amazing, its practical and useful. To be forced to enter text with only an OSK is a reoccurring nightmare of mine.

I'd rather have a real tablet instead of a toy. I didn't see any real office apps.

I'd probably roll on the floor laughing if someone came in my office with an IPAD and said they wanted to use it as their laptop replacement.

So in that context it appears to be a $500 toy.

If the Android tablet doesn't try to be a better IPAD and instead tries to be a better tablet (there is a difference) I think it could be a viable option.

Without a keyboard I don't see a lot of risk in this. I know the iPad crowd thinks that the iPad's OSK will bring peace to the Middle East but the VAST majority of people who actually work on their computers are going want a keyboard, it's just that simple and an OSK is simply not a replacement.

I guess they could dock it and connect it to a monitor. Pretty pointless at this juncture as a conventional laptop would cost less and not need a separate keyboard.

You should be keeping an eye on MeeGo news. It's Linux based and shares some DNA with Maemo. That looks promising. Android has a lot of momentum, though.
