Goodbye exclusive third party games

I agree that the whole console exclusivity was a little silly but most of us didn't really notice it until now. A few years ago, the consoles offered enough differences for people to choose one over the other. Today, the consoles are more like each other than ever before. Add in the fact that game development costs are skyrocketing and it's no wonder developers are "jumping ship". Why, as a developer, limit yourself to one console when there's so much more money to be had?

The only problem I'm having is deciding which console to buy games for now since I recently got a PS3 to compliment my 360.

This also means PC gaming will suffer, since there is no first party supporting it. But of course user generated contents can make up for that.

There are not much differences between 360 and PS3 in term of third party games, unless one is a die hard halo fan (or and Socom fan), can't go wrong with either system.

Also being a fanboy of a console is the stupidest thing to do, the more loyal one is to a console, the less deals the company will offer.

I think PC will still get a lot of the new devs who don't have the money to cough up royalties.

Now PSN and Xbox Live are popular and easy to use, small devs can just head there instead of trying to advertise over the net. But then PC has steam, still I believe the user base and the amount of people actually purchase through it is less than that of PS3 and Xbox

There will always be Pc-based developers, with games that are just more suited to pc's in some way like RTS's, Flight sims, Adventure games, etc. The indie developers will stick round as well (IE look at a game like Mount and Blade, an indie developed game that's flourished in the pc gaming crowd and has got a publisher/release coming up).

That said, I agree about being a fanboy, I never understood it myself, all it does it limit you.

Although services like steam and XBOX live have their advantages I always found them somewhat disconcerting. Do we really want one company to control access to digital game distribution? Sure there are smaller services like Stardocks but monopolies are never a good thing. It only took valve what four years to get to where they are now, luckily they seem to have consumers interests at heart, but just imagine if EA was in charge of steam. /cringe

The less exclusive games the better IMO, this way you don't need two or three consoles to enjoy all the games out there.

Hard to tell if this will be good or bad. It will force much better firstparty and hardware to give people a reason other than fanboyisim to buy a console, but it might also result is lower quality 3rd party games due to having to generalize them for all consoles.

There are always other consoles you can buy and as for PC, Steam is totally optional aside from Valve games.

$5 in game design trumps $500 in art assets. If cash-strapped publishers want to make games more profitable, they should start by making them more playable.

+1
However, I do not have a problems with exclusive mediocre games...

when they make games with cross platform multiplayer they'll really kick up their sales. if gears was available for ps3, you can bet your sweet testicles my friend would own a copy. instead, i own a copy and my friend has to come over and play it when i'm free.
