Good upgrade?

Hi there, I am looking to upgrade my video card from a GTX 260 to a GTX 670 FTW:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130802

I am running a i7 920 6gb ram. Would this be a good choice? Would the cpu be a bottleneck to this cards capability or should it be just right? I am looking to maximize my graphics without having to build an entire new machine.

Thanks,

Ryan

it is a possible bottleneck if you run the i7 920 at stock clocks. but i think it's fine if you have it to OC'd around 3.5+ ghz

this is probably pretty good advice although i'd be suprised if it bottlenecked, it depends on your resolution. what is your resolution :) ?

also overclocking your cpu is always preferred as it yields the highest reward

Thanks for the feedback.

I am running at stock speeds, 1080p resolution.

the resolution really does not matter much as a stock 920 would be a general limitation for a card like the gtx670. for most games it would not be noticeable though but if spending 400 bucks it would nice to get all the gtx670 has to offer in every game.

OP, get a cpu cooler if you dont have one and at least do a modest oc so you can try and get the most out of your card.

of course the resolution matters.

if hes playing at 2560x1440 do you think he needs a better cpu? naw he wouldn't

higher res = more reliant on card

lower res = more reliant on cpu

granted cpu still needs to pull his weight but his CPU is no slouch.

I think looking at the card choices, I think I would be better off with GTX 660 Ti, the only difference I really see is the 192 bit vs 256 bit, not sure what that will do on the performance. One interesting thing I noticed is that the newer cards have internal audio via hdmi instead of a spdif cable from the GPU to the motherboard, sounds like an improvement for sure. I have a zalman 120mm cooler on the cpu already, I really don't want to OC as the processor is pretty fast as is, I play league of legends and diablo 3 the most.

after reading that report you do not have to. a 7970 is faster then yours and at your resolution a gtx 670 will not be bottlenecked. if you have the budget for a 670 go for it, the memory bandwidth is a problem from what i've heard and i try to recommend the 670 to anybody willing to pay for it as it has been one of the most worthwhile purchases i have ever made.
