A tuner card from a differnt manufacturer will have different software.

therefore, there will be a different way to record "withen" each different piece of software

Does that have a hardware encoder? If not get a hauppauge pvr-250 if you going to blow that much money on one.

I got my Leadtek xp2000 deluxe for $47.00, works as well as an expensive one, but the HDTV tuners will be out soon so you may as well wait.

I love my Leadtek xp2000, it's great if you're on a budget or need a half height card.

You might also wanna check out this card:

It's a pretty affordable HDTV tuner that seems to be getting alot of praise.

I would wait for the ATI HDTV all in wonder to come out. But if you need one now, hauppauge 250/350 are always very good cards.

Well no, of course it isn't. It is a very respectable tuner/capture card for the money though. I had one for about a year or so before I upgraded to a PVR-350. Superior card in pretty much every way. Whether it's superior enough to warrant the price tag is debateable. Just got it. For the budget minded the LeadTek Winfast cards are pretty good. Wish SageTV supported them. Thus far I have not been able to get the Beta to recognize the card and perhaps it never will. I'd like to do a multi card SageTV setup but not so much I'm going to spend another 150-200 bucks for a hauppauge.

I was thinking of getting the PVR-350 myself and wonder what you think about it...Is it worth the money?

Not sure about that card but SageTV only supports hardware based encoders.

if you buy a hdtv card, you have to order hdtv channels through your cable provider in order to enjoy the card... right? I can't justify spending any amount of money on an hdtv card if I just have to pay more money for high def channels. Someone let me know... thanks.

The problem with HDTV cards is that the HD signal comes in two types: OTA (Over-the-Air) and QAM which is what you would get through your cable box; QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) has two types: Encrypted and Unencrypted.
Now QAM HD signals are suppose to be unencrypted except for the Premium channels but it looks like most QAM signals are encrypted which means that even with a HD Tuner card you'll have to live with an OTA signal.
So to answer your question- No you don't have to order HD channels to use the card, most likely they won't even show up. You can use a rabbit ears to get some local HD broadcasts though.

I recently got the Leadtek TV2000 Expert from Newegg. It's on sale today @ Newegg infact.

It's really easy to use as both a TV tuner and FM radio. Like one of the previous posts stated the IR remote isn't as nice as an RF one but for $50 it's half the price of the ATI.

I just got the Compro Videomate Gold Plus last week

Most of the time the picture is quite good, but as of this moment I am having some trouble on a couple channels, It might be as simple as fine tuning, I'm gonna mess with it some this week/weekend.

The proprietary software that comes with the card seems a little sub-par, as some reviews point out.
my beef with the software

Slow to record/timeshift - It just seriously takes too long, on the order of 10 seconds
Customizability is low -
cannot change default settings for remote keys(minor)
cannot define own record modes (name them that is, there is a single "custom" mode)

The timed record function is giving me problems
1st try it recorded video, no sound
2nd time it started recording then I left and came back to nothing

Anyways, the ATI ehome wonder looks sweet, I've never seen that before...
