Well my 8800 gt is starting to show its signs of age. It has been a good card but I am looking to upgrade it to a mid range card. I mainly play wow currently at 1600x900 and it does fine but with swtor on the horizon I feel the need to upgrade. My main question is wether there is any major changes to the card line ups coming out in the next 4 months or so. Right now i am looking at either a gtx 460 or radeon 6850.

Well I would wait for CES to come and pass to see what Nvidia might have. If nothing exciting comes from CES then its not a bad time at all.

Can't go wrong with that card for WoW.
But what are your system specs and PSU? the 8800GT is pretty tiny on power usage while the GTX 460 is more power hungry.

I just retired my 8800gt. I think its the perfect time to buy. I initially bought the ftw evga 460. I liked it but was turned off by the latest driver not working with my home theater projector. Only the shipping driver would produce anything more then scrambled video.
I returned it and bought a 6950. I have always been an nvidia person but I am now a convert after playing eyefinity in a bunch of games. Mafia 2, Burnout Paradise, BFBC2, all sick with 3 monitors on this single card. I will say the 8800gt produced nicer home theater videophile results so much so that I actuallly plan to hang onto it for reuse when I provision another machine to become the gaming master.
I say your only desicion is gtx 570/580 vs 6950/6970 and jump in. The 570 is worth the extra bucks over the gtx 460. Or if money is that tight it may be worth waiting in your case for the 560 but who knows the specs if or when its coming..

PSU is just fine to handle that GTX 460. The CPU will hold you back in CPU bound games like WoW but the on the GPU side the 460 will smoke through whatever you throw at it for what you need.
The 570 is nearly 100 bucks more and while its a great card I think with that CPU and you running at 1600x900 you'll be completely wasting it. The 6950 is a great card but again it shows its best colors at 1920x1080 and beyond so for what you need it'll be overkill. The 460 is even a bit overkill for that resolution and CPU plus you said you mainly play WoW and WoW is entirely CPU bound so save your money and go for the GTX 460 unless you wanna wait for CES.
Something to consider , a newer generation quad core plus an SSD (you can get 64GB ones for cheap) would really benefit WoW the most. WoW really bares down on the CPU hard so just something to keep in mind.

Buy whatever is cheaper, if you're comparing between the 460 1GB and the 6850, the 460's generally have lower prices + rebates.
UtopiA is spot on here. Buy whatever is cheaper as they are both the best value/performance cards out right now. I would recommend the 1gb cards though. This next year is going to be a great year for gaming monitors and you will want a card that runs 1920x1080 well.
