Good System Drive?

Does the system drive need to be fast for a 1.2TB file server? I can buy a Seagate 10GB 5400RPM 2MB ATA100 drive for like $10 shipped or a WD 80EB 5400RPM 2MB ATA 100 for 12 shipped. These drives come out of Xbox's.

Otherwise i'm going to make a 5GB partition for the OS on my WD 1200JB but if i'm copying to/from the 120GB wouldn't the whole PC slow down then?

For basic fileserving duties, no, it doesn't matter. You're more likely to be limited by the network I/O, especially if we're talking 10/100 ethernet.

Would a small 2 user FTP, copying DV files over the LAN to the filer server and streaming movies from the file server be considered Basic?

That's not what I had in mind, but unless you're talking about ethernet in the 1000 Mb/s range, your network connection will be the bottleneck if we're dealing with 5400 RPM class hard drives.

I meant the smaller drive just for the OS. Then i'll have 4x WD 250GB 8MB on a PCI Controller. I have a gigabit network.
 
it's probably a good idea to have a seperate system disk. make backups of it onto the array, though - those disks sound cheap and cheap sounds dead real fast.

why ftp files to it? smb or nfs mounts are cheap...

You could run Linux on it and then mount a "network drive" to save the files directly to it rather than create them locally and then copying them via ftp.

A seperate OS disk is a must.

Digital Video (720x480x29.997) needs about 30 megaBYTEs a second throughput

This speed cannot be achieved over 100 mbps ethernet. (limited to around 8-9 megaBYTEs per second in real world performance) .. gigabit is faster than your hdd's are.. :)



I would suggest a 1 gigabit network and then, like suggested by others, you could use that 1 terabyte "F:\>" drive as a 'real hard drive'

the other reason this is important is..

if two people are working on a video project..

having two working copies of the same file .. . will cause conflicts.


Considering I have 1.6 Terabytes in my main computer. and 5 terabytes in my file server [yeeha!] I might have a thing or two to say about this..

Scratch the DV work. Think i'll just dedicate dad's box for that.
 
Ever heard of ripping DVDs to 1:1 images? Yeah, that takes 4 to 10 GB per side per movie. It adds up, especially with the large DVD collections many people have. Also, TV show collections really rack up the DVD count, as do animes and such.
