what the the top soundcards nowadays? I'm looking for a focus on sound quality, though something that does acceleration to save a few fps in games would be nice, I'd take sound quality over that any day. Would prefer digita/optical output for easy integration with a receiver (a card that can send 2-channel content like mp3s as well as full surround sound through the optical). What are my main options? Setup will be going to what is currently a 2-channel setup, will soon be a 2.1, and will grow from there. It will be going right to a receiver, hopefully through a digital interface and then let the receiver do the processing.

If the receiver is doing the majority of the processing like in the situation I'm describing, is a soundcard really that important? I"m currently using onboard sound (realtek 7.1, msi k8n neo platinum), and if I'm not going to get much of an improvement because of the use of the digital interface, then should I bother?
 
Chaintech AV710 is a good card if your on a budget. Despite it having a huge hate thread on these forums, if your priority is sound quality over gaming its not a bad choice. Also, if you are only using it for 2 channel audio you can use it's higher quality wolfson dacs on the rear outs.

It also has a digital out.
 
sound blast seris. A tad expensive, but it has absolutly everything. especially if you go with the developer seris.
