My computer has decided to kick the bucket after 6 years. I started with it as a decent gaming rig, but obviously haven't been able to play many games with it lately. I'm building a new system and would like suggestions on a video card that'll run today's games well, and it would be nice if I don't have to replace it anytime soon. My monitor only does 1280X1024 and I'm buying an i5 so the vid card will probably be the slowest component in the system.

What's the best single card I can get for around $100? Would I see much better performance going closer to 150 or 200? Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

At this resolution, you can pretty much throw any card from the last year or 2 in it, and you'll be able to max out just about everything out there.

If you go used, you can probably get yourself a 4870 or GTX260 in that range. Those would give you enough power to upgrade your monitor down the road, and still have enough oomph to max out just about anything.

If you want a new card, I know you can get a 4850 for under $100 now, and probably a GTX250 as well. ATI has new cards coming out very soon, so you will probably be able to get the 4xxx series on the cheap in the next few weeks.

Look at a Radeon HD 4870 1GB. They're dirt cheap anymore, $150 or less. Then if you get a new monitor you'll have more options.

If you really will be staying with your current display for a long, long time, then a Radeon HD 4850 512MB is probably a good option at a little over $100.

If that's still too much, look in to the Geforce 9800 GT and Radeon HD 4770.
