I am looking to help get my friend a new video card for his computer. He has a slim line case and needs a low profile card.

He plays WoW and Cataclysm is eating his computer alive with just onboard video.

Any decent cheapish suggestions?

Looking at like AMD 5450 or 5550, any other suggestions?
 
How much is he(or you if you're buying it for him) looking to spend?

What is the native resolution of the monitor he plays on? If you don't know, then by screen size we could know with reasonable certainty.

Cataclysm has DX11 optimizations that boost performance, so I recommend going DX11 for that reason. The 5450 is great with power, but it won't be a noticeable upgrade, and if your friend is willing to spend a little bit more, will get much much more image quality for around $60. The 5550 and 5570 are both available in low profile on Newegg. There are specialty versions of the 5670 and 5750 too, but will probably be out of the price range you're looking at(if I'm assuming correctly that is).

Palit GTS 450 for $137 shipped (be wary of power)

MSI 5670 for $87 shipped

Sapphire 5570 for $55 after $15 MIR(this is the best card for the price that I saw)

4650s for ~$40 after MIR. These all have DDR2.

Spending less than the 5570 will be met with diminishing returns from the prices and cards I looked at.

Tell him to rob a liquor store and get a 6850 or gts 450 .I just ordered a 5450 for an HTCP I'm building and after doing the research I don't think its enough for Cataclsym to be enjoyable.
 
Avoid the HD5450, but the HD5570 should be ok, it's got about as much power as the old midrange cards like the HD3870, 8800GS and 9600GT had.
 
I think he means single slot.. which a 9800GT eco card or 8800GT single slot would be my picks but it sounds like the power supply will be the limit on the buy.
 
you can get a single slot XFX HD5770. It'll run off a 300W PSU if it has a 6-pin.

I think he means low profile since he stated it's for a slimline computer in which case I'd recommend the Sparkle GTS-250 1GB if you can still find it. I had the Palit GTS-450 and it's a fine card but it was too hot and LOUD so I sent it back. If your OK with that then go with the 450. I then picked up the MSI 5670 for $60 on newegg (open box) but it wasn't the big improvement over the 5570 I was hoping for so I traded with a friend for a LP GTS-250 1GB. This has the best blend of power, heat, noise of all the LP cards I've used. I'm pretty sure Powercolor makes a LP 5770 also, but I can't find anyplace that sells it.
