These aren't exactly notebook specific...
Encarta: it's always great to have a mobile encyclopedia for those times that instant research gives you the edge (especially in class...!)
A good utility to control fan speed and monitor temps... http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php looks good if it will work for you. But it doesn't work on my HP Pavilion -_-
As mentioned before: a good network sniffer. A good one will detect some networks that Windows wont and it will also give you the specs on the system.
http://www.netstumbler.com/ is a really good one that I use.
And if you use linux (I would suggest SuSE for notebooks since it has a painless install that rivals that of XP) AirSnort is a good uuuhh... WEP * "recovery" tool... yeah... of course I only suggest to do such a thing with permission!
http://airsnort.shmoo.com/
Then, of course, some good themes! Gotta keep your notebook looking it's best for all those other peeps to drool at ^_^
http://www.tgtsoft.com/
http://www.wincustomize.com/
That's all I can think of right now... I'm always looking for some application that I can install on my notebook that will let me use the infrared port as a reciever and my Sony Clie as a remote! But I havn't seen it yet...
Hope I helped!!
