good inexpensive case with redundant psus?

Hi - does anyone know of a fairly inexpensive server case that has redundant PSUs or support for them? And could somebody explain how exactly they work? I mean like how are they attached? Do you need some sort of special circuitry that will switch from one psu to the other when one fails? Or are they just wired in parallel and they both take up about half the load?
 
redundant PSUs have a shared bus (they both run concurrently) that protects them from power surges when removing or adding supplies (even though the unit is off) I have several
there is basically an enclosure for the moduals (either 1+1 redundant or N+1) that has a backplane for the hotswap and the cables

a more important question would be, what are you powering?
older supplies are anemic on the +12V rail
whereas new supplies are EPS12V and have from 3 to 4 +12V rails

cases are cheap but Redundant EPS12V compliant PSUs arent

I have older redundants (ATX and ATX12V) that I mostly picked up off ebay
even have a few good new ones Id be willing to part with (came stock with cases but werent used),
but that would really depend on what your powering and what U the rackmount is
or if its a tower case

Hmmm... Myabe redundat PSUs aren't even worth it then... I was hoping that you could use normal ATX PSUs and I could just put in two antec 350Ws. This is for a server I'm building that needs to have minimal downtime. We're already getting a huge UPS for it - but I thought this might be a good second backup plan. (server's going to have ALOT of important stuff on it - so we aren't taking any chances with it)

So what kinds of costs do you think we're looking at here for using redundant psus? Oh and the case will not be rackmount. A tower would be preferrable right now.
 
Inexpensive being how much?
This case, which I have, can take a vertical redundant power supply such as this, which I know for a fact will fit in that case. I had one that I got refurb from newegg for $90 :eek:, but it was non-functional as a result of having 1 300w module and 1 400w module, oops :eek:
Anyway, for a redundant setup and a case to match, you're going to drop some dough.

again what specifically are you powering?
there has been a change in which rail the mobo and assorted components primarilly draw their power, if we are talking dual P3 or something they will be running off a VRM\s that draw from the +5V, whereas if we are talking a P4, MP, Opteron, Xeon we are into the +12V rail powering the VRMs, and isolated +12V rails at that

Oh sorry I forgot to mention that. Right now it's looking like it should be a farily basic P4 system. I'm just speccing it out right now - so I'm not too sure of anythign just yet...
 
well, even if you dont get a redundant, youll want to carefully review what spec the supply is compliant with
many are compatible but thats not the same thing
get those isolated ATX12V v1.3 > v2.0 +12V rails (dual)
or EPS12V 3x pr 4x isolated +12V rails,
especially in a supply with the normal "spec" 5% regulation

its really weird Ive been coming across alot of supplies
that arent even built to the original ATX spec for rail compliance
( 5% for +3.3V, +5V, +12V )

really good supplies will do better than 5%
and often have a lower ripple than spec as well
