Good GPU folder?

I would say running the GPU client on anything short of an X1900GT is probably not worth the effort. I don't see any real hope of an nVidia client any time soon, they still haven't released a client for the R600 and RV670 chips.
 
Whats the rest of the system ?

If you can run the SMP client, I'd stick to just that.
A lot better Points per Day per Watt.
The only real time to look at the GPU client is if you cannot run the SMP client because the CPU is to slow-wont support it.

Mixing the SMP & GPU clients on one box may give you a few hundred more PpD but it takes a lot more power & is not a "set & forget" setup if you want it to work well.

I've got an Athlon 3700+ that's going to see service running the GPU client. With something like that it makes sense, that's about 150-200ppd for that CPU if you're just running the standard console. But, I've got an X1900XT that I can pop in there and bang out about 700ppd.

I just need to scrounge up another single core Athlon or Pentium 4 to run my other X1900XT.
 
Have you actually seen 700ppd with the GPU client? I ask because I have had absolutely no luck what so ever trying to fold on my X1950pro AGP card... Frankly it kind of irritates me, as I'm not a gamer at all and the only reason I bought the damn thing was for folding.... If you have any advice for me, it would be appreciated:)

 
I had my X1950XTX's at 770 PpD with a little overclock but that was a few months back while I was GPU folding.

One very quick GPU folding 101.
You need the latest versions of DX9 & .NET framework 1.1.
Turn the two ATI services off that start at bootup to lock the GPU's speed.
Then use ATITool to clock the card upto or over its 3D speed.
Easy ............ ;)

I saw 660ppd on my X1950Pro AGP on my dual opty 165.
If I can't sell the card I will be putting it into an underdesk footwarmer aka single core athlon xp machine.
 
Alright, thanks guys. I'm going to give this card another shot after the holidays and see what I can do.... and the bad news is I think my boxen at work have crashed, probably a poower outage, and I won't be able to get them back up until after the 1st:mad:

 
But as far as the amount of work done goes? Aren't the GPUs the best?

I've been averaging 1800 PPD on the SMP client.
 
In terms of work done, the PS3 may be the best, but that uses relatively low point WUs.....video is probably pretty close too

in terms of PPD, SMP beats all of them, but it uses a very specialized set of WUs worth big points
 
Its my understanding that .............

The GPU-PS3 client does the most work but has the smallest range of protiens that it can fold.
The SMP client is in thye middle of the range both in terms of work & proteins.
The standard client does the least work but has the greatest range of protiens that it can fold.

In terms of PpDpWatt run the SMP where possible.
Then run the GPU client.
As a last resort run the standard CPU client unless in a busy work envioment.
Then run the standard client as its not beta.

On my GPU folder, I didn't install the .NET framework. Is it recommended and if so why?

Another question I have concerns the PPD I should be seeing. Currently, my machine produces an average of 550 PPD. Sometimes a bit more or less depending on the WU. My card is an HIS IceQ3 Radeon X1950 Pro AGP 512MB. I'm running a Northwood P4@~3.5GHz and WinXP. Is this expected output or should I be producing more?

Any replies appreciated.
 
I have a VisionTek X1950pro 256m AGP in a P4 3G machine with 1g memory running Vista HP. I have the .NET framework and the DX patches. I installed this client last Sunday and I have been averaging 330 ppd (every 19~20 hours actually)... completing one frame about every 15 minutes or so.

These are by far the best results I have seen with this system so far. This is my fourth attempt at folding on this card...

Edit.... I should add that this particular card is very stubborn when it comes to overclocking.... unless I'm missing something. I've been all over the video card forum trying to get advice as to how to achieve a stable O/C, but no luck. If any of you have tips for me, I'd appreciate them!!!

Your card has 256MB of RAM and mine is a 512MB version. That must account for most of the difference in performance between our systems. Maybe Vista has more overhead as well, but I can't say for sure. What I want to know is how some people get over 700PPD with the GPU client on their 512MB cards. Does the connecting interface matter?
 
From what I've been told, the AGP interface should make very little, if any difference in performance. I really can't think of any reason that it would.

And I'm sure that the memory difference is a big factor as far as my production goes. I'm actually rather happy with it so far. This is my "main" machine and I have seen no degradation in performance what so ever.

 
Yes, I read the same thing. The biggest difference results from the amount of video memory on the card and the interface is negligible.

Does anyone have information regarding the .NET framework and if it's recommended for better performance?
 
I have a p4 3.0ghz that desperately needs an x1900 AGP card. Only problem is they are so spendy, I would rather buy a cpu/mobo combo. If anyone ever sees a deal on these, post please! Was hoping to find one at some of the OEM system pull shops...
 
You need .NET framework 1.1 for the client to work.
.NET framework 2.0 does not include the parts of 1.1 needed to fold.
So if your card folding then you have the correct .NET framework installed.
But if you want to be safe, then jusy download the lastest version of 1.1

When I had my computers GPU folding, I was doing 6 mins a frame on a X1950XTX on the PCI-E bus.
Its not a matter of overclocking your vid card, its more a matter of making sure your running at true 3D speeds with ATI Tools if you want to get better PpD.

Also the fastest vidio drivers to fold with are still v6.11 as long as they support your card.

It appears that .NET Framework was not installed on my system, or if it was, then it wasn't showing up anywhere on my hard drive nor in the Add/Remove applet. I installed version 1.1 and my system is folding the same WU that I had stopped mid-way, a consistent 20 sec/frame faster. Not as much as I had hoped but it did seem to help out a bit. :)

I will proceed to DL the 6.11 drivers in the next few days and see what improvements it will have on production. That's about as much I can do without OC. I do have ATITool installed but don't really know how to use it productively. Every time I attempt slight adjustments it causes display corruption, so I may already be at the effective limits of my card.

BTW, is there a performance difference in folding between 'XTX' and 'Pro' cards or does that simply indicate bus types?
 
How do I stop the client without loosing any work? And once that is done, how do I re-start it?

Simple questions... but I can't seem to find the answer...

 
Thanks for the heads up. I can't wait to see results on these cards. It should be interesting, especially if the new client will also support the X2 variants... ;)

Its already confirmed that new client will support HD2xxx and HD3xxx - and it looks like NV client wont arrive soon (just my opinion - H2 2008 or later)
 
Update: I installed the 6.11 drivers and that seems to have further reduced my frame times by 10-15 seconds. My PPD has increased to ~580 with the slowest WUs.

The only thing I had left to do was OC the card, so I attempted that next. I'm not sure how to use ATITool properly yet but managed to get my times down to 3 min/frame!! Needless to say, after a few quick frames I lowered the frequency to the speed it was before...

Does anyone know what an effective OC is with the X1950 cards?
