What are some good earbuds? I bought some Sony MDR-EX71SL and I hate these. The cord is retarded and the highs sound like complete crap.

I'm looking for some earbuds that dont have a retarded cord and have good bass and highs.

Either the E2c by Shure or the MDR-ex81 by Sony. The 81 is not even remotely similar to the audio output by the 71/51 series. Plus, it comes with an ear loop which allows for lesser microphonics and an easy way to sort of just chill with the phones... you can have it all the way in or not all the way in (like if you are talking to someone).
 
How much do you want to spend?

If you're willing to spend the cash you can get some really nice canalphones.

If you want to start low, I hear the Koss Plugs are pretty decent for between $10 and $20.

Beyond that look at Shure and Etymotics. The Shure E2s are pretty decent at between $60 and $100. If you go that far... I have a pair of E3c's I bought for $120.

From what I've read, the E3s are more detailed and accurate than the E2's, but without a little EQ help they may sound like they lack in bass when compared to the E2s. Shure's have thicker cables so they're more durable than the Ety's. They also are supposed to suffer less from microphonics (cable noise...) On the other hand, I've read that the Ety's are even more precise than the Shure's.

I've only actually heard the E3's so understand that I'm only repeating what I've read while I was researching... I'd love to fix that problem, but I'm a broke student.

Canalphones in general take a bit of getting used to. Once you get the fit down, the comfort and sound quality greatly increase.

Sennheiser MX500/MX550 are pretty damn good IMO. Fairly cheap too.
 
I just order the Sharp MD33S's from audiocubes people seem to rave about them, the only issue they seem to have is microphonics which can be improved using a shirt clip.
 
Koss The Plug has a uniformly terrible reputation on head-fi. Recommendations there generally go:

<$15: Sennheiser MX400 / 500 (or 450 / 550 for a different sound)
$15 - $40: EX71s, MD33s, EX81s
$40-$100: cheap Etys or Shures - e2c, e3c, er6
$100+: the rest of the Ety and Shure ranges
silly money: the Seansaphonics and UE custom ear molded things

I don't think anyone's really had a good listen to the new Sony Qualia earbuds yet, to see how they fit into the high-end side of things.
