"Good" distance from CO for DSL?

I was wondering what most people consider a "good" distance to be from your CO for DSL access. I know the logical limit is something like 8000 feet. I'm getting a new line for work and we're about 3,500 feet from the CO and the tech sounded surprised, as if this was pretty good for DSL installs.

Does anyone have any input?

u will get much more input over at dslreports.com forums

3500 ft sounds great to me, little over a half a mile.

however I would stick with cable if you have an option, way way faster, our provider keeps upgrading at no charge (comcast), things keep getting better.

Anything under 10,000 feet and you are pretty good for DSL. Not that 10,000+ is bad, but if you are under you should have 0 issue.

Elijah: Maybe he needs a static IP or a less B.S. Acceptable Use Policy. I have comcast and I would drop them in a second for 1/3 the D/L speed if I could get a static IP and run servers. Many DSL providers give out statics and allow you to run servers. Howver I can not get DSL :(, and Comcast charges WAY too much for a biz line. Cox on the other hand has a great Soho plan, so if you can get Cox go for them and the SOHO plan.

That's almost exactly the case. Speakeasy is even working in a discount if we plaster their name everywhere. Comcast wants $100 more a month for the same speeds, without a static IP.

This is exactly why I've got DSL, incidentally. Additionally, you can toss in "good customer service."

I'd say even up to 15,000 ft is fine most of the time. ADSL is rated to 18,000, with a plus/minus (usually minus) depending on local conditions. 3500 is outstanding and will allow access to the top tiers of ADSL service.

Agree with lomn75, I work for a phone company, one day out of curiosity we tried to install DSL for a customer that was 5 miles from the CO, about 26400, the equipment manufacturer said that it shouldn't work but it did. Customer has been really happy with 256k dsl

Most DSL providers will cut service off at approx 15,000 feet. Beyond that, the signal strength degrades to much and is unreliable for both speed and stability.

So i'm gathering that 3000 feet is pretty good as far as things go. Thanks.

If your approx 3000 from the CO, your speeds and signal will be excellent.
