i've got a budget of about $300 to get the GF a camcorder ( i can go a little over but would rather not) now i know almost nothing about these things but i do need two things, something thats decent in low light settings and isn't a nightmare to transfer videos over to my PC. am i asking for much? should i lower my expectations? can anyone help me out?

Not sure if you already purchased yet but go with something like the Sony HC38. I believe circuit city has it for $314 and that would be your best value. You still need to buy tapes and a firewire cable to upload to the PC which is another $40-50. If you don't want to go that high, you can settle with the HC28 which is the model below it. It's decent just missing a few features like record/zoom on the LCD and a slightly worse looking LCD. You're also think you're getting a smaller censor in the HC28, meaning poorer light quality.

Sony gives nighshot (record in complete darkness), the best optical image stablizer on the market (the super steady shot) and a touch screen which I love.

Check it out, you wont be disapointed.
