I've had problems with my current wireless PCI card in my desktop; it would drop the signal rather frequently and even make my router need a power recycle. . I don't know how that is even possible. Anyway I think it has to do with my PCI slot since I tested the card in another computer and it seems to work well.

That being the case I would like to get a PCI-express x1 wireless card. Or is it better to go usb? Wireless G is what I'm using currently. The desktop wireless space seems kind of lucrative. . can anyone recommend a good model?
 
Try getting the latest drivers from Ralink for the "PCI/mPCI/CB (RT256x/RT266x)"

I would get this ENCORE ENUWI-2XN42 for $13.99 with Free Shipping. It's 2T2R (300Mbps) 802.11n and has decent antennas. You can use a USB extension cable to place it wherever you get the best signal nearby. A USB adapter provides flexibility since you can use it on pretty much any computer.

If you must have PCIe x1, go for this ENCORE ENEWI-2XN42 for $20 Shipped. The hardware is pretty much the same as the USB adapter above, just different interfaces. Both use a Realtek RTL8192CU chipset.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't know about getting the drivers from RALINK, I usually got them from the Rosewill site. I guess its kinda like getting a graphics driver from ati/nvidia vs. getting it from the video card manufacturer.

-EDIT- are there any desktop or usb solutions with an intel chipset? intel seems to be looked upon most favorably among wifi chipsets for clients.
