I have been talking with this guy about a Alienware M15x he has for sale. Specs:

- i7 740qm processor
- 6gb ram
- 300gb hd
- Radeon Mobility 5850 video card
- 15" 1600x900 screen
- full docs/restore discs/charger/battery
- says in excellent, but a bit dusty condition. Says battery goes about an hour on charge at high performance settings.

Anyhow, I have talked him down from his asking price of $700 to $580. Thoughts/opinions?

Have you looked at similar models on eBay, to see how much they are listed for?

Yeah, looks like $600-$700. I am more curious if folks who know about them, if they feel it's worthy of that price, and with the possible future upgradability of the unit. It appears the gpu can be pushed up to a 6990m, but the CPU only to a i7-940xm? Also, I am curious about the heat issues, especially coming from an ASUS G60vx.

I am also curious what people think about the 900p screen?

Can't help you there. My best system is an Inspiron 6400 with a Core2Duo T5500, running the screen at 1280x800 res. I just traded for a 1gb stick of ram so that I can double what's in there now. GPU and CPU numbering systems (well, CPU only after about Pentium-M-era stuff) have the same effect on me as the "stupefy" spell in Harry Potter (I *think* that's the right one), i.e. mass confusion and a really messy hairdo.

Sorry 'bout that. Maybe someone else can chime in?

It's not a bad deal. $550 is probably a fair deal. <$475 and you're talking a good deal.

It's 2 generation old tech, that battery is probably on it's way out, and "dusty" for a laptop isn't a good thing since they're generally a pain to clean out and a gaming laptop needs all the cooling it can get. And I'm guessing there's no warranty left?
A brand new Y580 with i7-3610QM, 2GB GTX 660m, 8 gigs of ram and a 1TB hdd is $819 from lenovo. That's without even talking about the Lenovo or Dell outlets and the sales they can run.

Yeah, I think Kueller is right. I have been caught up in the whole Alienware mystique, and it sounded like a good deal. Thats a good deal on the Lenovo lappy, but isn't that with the downgraded screen?

580 is a good deal you can resell that computer for more..

To whom?

Remember if you sell it on ebay you have to deal with fees/shipping. If you sell it on craigslist, you are going to get lowballed horribly. I would shoot to get it for $500, and settle for $550, with the expectation you will have to replace the battery soon.

$500 isn't a bad deal.

My thoughts exactly. I will be picking it up first thing in the morning. Has anyone seriously upgraded their M15X on here? Looks like it uses the MXM 3.0B standard on the GPU. As far as the CPU goes, looks like I am limited to the 840qm and the 940xm.

Not really. Newer laptops are faster, cooler and have 5+ hours battery. As others have said, that is a few generations behind.

That laptop runs the first gen i7 mobile quad cores, basically mobile lynnfield i7's. 45nm, etc. Not so great on battery power but they were pretty fast as long as they had a decent clockspeed.

I have heard of people putting 7970m's into those machines and getting them to work, and thats a pretty dang fast video card for a laptop (it's essentially a lower-clocked 7870, but can be overclocked to just about 7870 speeds).

$500 or less I would say.

Well, I got it for $500. Works great, although I noticed the right side fan is a bit noisy. I opened the bottom panel and cleaned the fans/exhaust vents out thoroughly. Can't wait to try and throw some upgrades on it. Being that it uses the MXM 3.0B standard, I have quite a selection of GPU's I can chose from (including what extide said).

Do you think the 660m GPU would run alot cooler than the 5850 mobility? I ask, due to it's smaller size. At some point, I would also like to go to an 940XM CPU (highest CPU upgrade available for this chipset).
