Hey,

A buddy of mine is looking for a 40"+ tv, and asked me for any help he could get in this hunt while only giving me the budget of "a good deal." TVs aren't exactly a market I look at, so I figured I'd ask here. If anyone has any favorites in this size range that someone is giving a great not to be seen again for 6 months out deal or just a favorite for a price to performance ratio it would be appreciated. I know right now he's just glancing at the random newegg deal:

Is that any good? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Actually some of the best deals I've seen are at Sears when they get rid of old inventory. Often on their "friends and family" nights. I saw 40+" vizios for <$500. As far as online... I have no idea. Sorry.

Best way to get a good deal is to wait until after boxing day. That's when you find super deals on end of cycle models but don't leave it too long after boxing day or they will all be gone. First week after boxing day there are still many great deals around. That's what I did last year when I bought my 50" LG Plasma. I got it for $1,000.00 CAD less at Futureshop than what one store still wanted for the same model and I didn't have to line up for hours either like many people do on boxing day. Those same boxing day prices can often be had for the whole month of January so long as they still have stock.

For HDTV I personally like Plasma better and Samsung, LG and Panasonic all make good Plasma screens. LCD is much better than the early days of HDTV but I still see viewing angle issues. Colors and brightness shifts depending on viewing angle so if you have a family and want all of them to have optimal image quality from any angle then Plasma is the way to go. Better black gradations too.
