Good cheap receivers...

anyone know of any good cheap receivers for around 100 bux??
im thinking of getting these if they still are on sale
nothing from craigslist because my friend bought 2 receivers then they broke
or were not working properly

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...10&cm_re=polk_audio_40-_-82-290-010-_-Product

Accessories4less has some great deals on factory refurbs from Onkyo and Marantz. They even still have a warranty on them. Also the Monitor 40's are decent speakers (I run a pair of them and a CS1 in my bedroom)

yes because obviously all sellers on craigslist are the same and all products from craigslist are the same and therefore one person's experience means that will be the reality for all persons and all transactions on craigslist

based on that you shouldn't buy anything from newegg either, because I've got stuff from them before and its come damaged or broken

seriously...

A4Less is a good place if you're short on money
otherwise craigslist/ebay for used gear (might try audiogon but its mostly richie rich snobs trying to dump their $80k systems because they gotta make the loan payment this month)
or amazon/newegg and get one of the inexpensive Teac/Sony/Sherwood stereo models, in the $80-$110 range, or buy the VSX-519 (Pioneer) for ~$150 (it does 5.1)

like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Teac-AG790A-A...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1260645890&sr=8-1

if you don't care about the input/output abilities of the receiver, and are on a tight budget, maybe something like this is a better option:
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-380

and I'm going to assume you've noticed thats 15wpc, and the speakers say 20-120wpc, let me first qualify: it will work

however the 15wpc output on that T-Amp will mean that you can't get "as loud" as the Teac or something else in the 80-120Wpc range; in other words, it'll be more than enough power if they're sitting on your desk by your computer, or in a small dorm room/bedroom for watching TV/whatever else, but it won't max the speakers out

theres also this from PE with free shipping:

thanks obobski and endershadow...
@obobski
im not saying that "all" people on craigslist have faulty items i just dont want to risk it because then i cant return it if its broken..
then again newegg does sometimes have faulty items but ive never experienced a faulty item
(built a new computer off them)
yea i was looking at that sherwood receiver on newegg and its like 10 bux more +shipping...

do you know of any good bookshelf speakers for around 120?
i know thoughs polk audios are onsale on newegg for just around that price + free shipping
but have never heard them in action...

thanks,
tyler

posting the same thing twice? eh? (forum gremlins apparently are in these parts...)

the M40's are decent bookshelves, they aren't full range speakers, but they sound good

if you're getting that receiver, I'd buy it on PE, its cheaper + free ship, might also consider amazon for this, as its generally free ship over $25

ohh it was on accident: didnt think it sent the first time so i clicked it twice
sorry

but yeah ill def check around

or ill end up with some AV40'S

I've also got a similar question. Do the receivers posted here have decent DACs? Or are there any fairly cheap receivers that also have some decent DACs so we can just bypass our soundcards?

Thanks in advance!

Look at The Speaker Company. They have a HUGE deal going on right now and have some Very decent speakers, but you better buy quick they are running out of stock on a lot of their stuff...

you will not ever be able to fully bypass the soundcard except by replacing it with another soundcard or output device, and this myth that somehow connecting digital output from your audiocard means the receiver does "everything" is getting quite old (the soundcard is more than a D/A, contrary to what most "audiophile information" websites claim)

not to mention that the D/A's you'll find on a decent soundcard will be easily better than what you'll get on a receiver until you clear into the four-figure range

also, starting your own threads is an awesome way to ask unrelated questions

to the OP (on topic):
the Polk's you found are fine, the TSC deal would be good as well, not to be a total pain, but you've posted about 9000 times asking "what should I buy", if you're really this
indecisive, nobody can help you decide (you'll just keep getting new suggestions which will muddle the whole process)

maybe go try and find some of these speakers, or some speakers in general, to audition yourself, so you can get an idea of what you're buying (Best Buy or local shops can be your friend in this regard)

Find something older and a little used and it'll be cheap. Heck, I've been using a Sony 5.1 on analog connections, and it sounds pretty darn good. ( Infinity Klipsch 5.2 setup. Infinity Beta fronts, entra rear, with 2 Klipsch subs, (RSW10 and a Synergy 10)

Most people who come over and watch movies tell me they can't believe how good the sound is. Clean and crisp and it was a receiver I got next to free.

Is it a Sony ES? Newer Sony's aren't that great IMO.

No, it's a Sony STR-DE345... I'll be honest, I expected it to sound like crap, but it doesn't. And don't get me wrong, I just haven't wanted to spend the money on something like a denon or yamaha yet, but for college, my setup is very satisfying.

@obobski

Craigslist! Just look around later tonight and you might trip across something. Just gotta decide the options you want and keep an eye out.

Actually, compared to even a few years ago, things are more inexpensive and you get more quality/performance for your dollar.

It really is true. The bang for the buck ratio these days is pretty ridiculous compared to what it used to be. I keep looking at electronics and can't believe the prices some of the things are dipping down to.

hey, their new ES stuff ain't bad, can't knock that hustle, granted, its like $3500+ receivers and $2000+ BD players we're talking about

and I'll always take a Sony VCR over anything else, eight days a week

hopefully this will provide you insight that we can't (its nothing personal, its just hard to share a sensory experience via text)

I will tell you, nothing you've looked at is "bad", at least nothing in this thread or other threads I've seen you asking in, so you're on the right path :)

did you happen to test out any other speakers they had?

i went into the music section and those and a couple others (bx5's/mackies/rokit 6's)
i tested them all out...
those rokits sound soo good but i just dont have to money for that and the av40 is perfect for my budget...

they sound really goo tho...

they have a home theater section but thats all the high end stuff

the home theater section in BB usually starts at ~$80/pr on speakers (at least the one nearest me), like those Insignias, and then goes up from there (the most expensive thing I've seen locally at a BB are either ML Purity's or Klipsch XF-48's)

but the monitors you looked at aren't bad at all, if the AV-40's work for you, no harm there, but if you'd rather save for the KRK's, thats your choice as well

thing is if i get the rokits i dont know how to setem up

they have TLR inputs in the back of each 1 so if i buy a pair
then how would i connect 2 1/4 inch cables into my comp
(splitter??)

you mean XLR?

you can get XLR to TS adapters, which will be mono, and then a stereo TRS to 2xmono TRS adapter and connect that (might also need a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter set in there somewhere)

or build a single cable thats XLR to TRS stereo, if you have the time
