I used to play a lot of FPS games and always bought what I thought was the best card available to me. Currently I am using a geforce 6800 GT. I am wondering however, if I need that much power to play the RTS games I play more reguarly than the Shooters.

I'm just thinking ahead to next time I could put the cash from the high end video card toward a better proc and mem.

Any input would be appreciated as always.

P.S. Why don't they include the top RTS games of the time in the Hard Ocp benchtests? Just a thought.

RTS games are more CPU/RAM dependant, spend your money upgrading those first.

i just wanna know what supreme commander will require. if i have that, im happy. :)

Age of Empires 3 may make me upgrade from my 6600gt, but I won't know for sure until I get it in October.

sorry for being a little OT but that game is gonna be freakin awesome, total annhilation was one of the best RTS's i ever played

I havn't seen specs on Supreme Commander yet. Hard to guess at this point. The few screenshots don't look too demanding, but they're zoomed in. And this is a game that could have over a thousand units on the screen at once. Since this one is fully 3d accelerated, it's gonna be tough to figure out.

I'd say that a 6600 or X700 with 256mb would be an absolute minimum for decent online play?

Remember how the original game was? I had this stupid celeron back then that was overclocked to 450mhz, and 256MB ram, which was insane at the time. My friends and I would get together and play that game all weekend. One game would sometimes go for hours, at about 1-2 fps since we'd hack the unit limit up to insane levels.

Those were the days.

That reminds me, I need to go invade their forum and beg them to let this one push the limit like the old one did. I think this game begs for dual core support, and some monster monitor resolutions. 1920 and up.

Amen to the total annihilation comments. I remember playing that on my first computer ever, waiting 30 minutes for the damn thing to load on my 75mhz system. It was so worth it. I got a k2 and ocd it to 450 mhz and was so thrilled that it loaded so much faster...haha. That game still taxed even my next upgrade with tons of units on the screen. What a great game though. Played all night long at lans and still go back to play it again today. True simulated rts's never caught on but oh well, supreme commander all the way baby.
