I was just thinking of getting two 200-300GB SATA hdd's and putting them in raid 1, I just got a bunch of music and documents over the years and it would suck to lose them all :)

is this a good idea or is there anything else that is better for the same price or cheaper?

Also what are some good Round Cables that come in shorter lengths, i always see 18 and 24", i need some small flexible ones for my ATA133 drives.

Any good SATA cables people recommend or they all the same? :)
 
This is NOT a backup solution this is an uptime solution. A backup solution involves pulling the file to another storage medium, off of the computer, where it can't be affected by problems that affect the computer.
 
Regardless of terminology, I think the point he made was that he wants some data redundancy. Is it back up you are looking for or just security from a drive failure? If you system gets hosed (virus, corupt system files.. whatever) a mirrored drive will do nothing for you, as the mirror will be corrupt as well. If you accidentally delete something it's gone on the mirror as well.

If all you're looking for is protection from a drive failure, go with a mirrored set. If you want to be able to restore in the event of a problem (hardware or software) than a good backup solution is for you. There is some good software of there that will do a bare metal restore of a drive in the event of a failure or data corruption but you'll need some serious storage behind it.
 
I was just looking for some protection on a drive failure...once and a while i use software and copy the contents of a drive to another drive and then i pull that drive out and put it on my shelf hehe but that drive isnt up to date most of the time, since i dont do it that much.
 
if protection from drive failure is all you're looking for, then RAID 1 is a great choice. Keep in mind though that this will offer no protection what so ever from viruses or other data related problems. It only provides hardware redundancy.

Yah i knew it wouldnt protect me from the usual computer problems, since it is part of the system :) I think in addition to this I will keep my 160 gig around and make it external and copy an image over from the other drive to this one every so often, so wouldnt have to deal with viruses etc.. :)
