Good 2.0 PC Speakers?

Does a sub (2.1) help with anything besides the bass? I had my house remodled and I took the PC down. I used to have dual monitor and 4.1 setup. When they go finished, I put my CRT up and the PC and I am just using headphones now. I really like the huge decrease in the amount of wires and desk clutter. My question is, will I lose much sound quality going to 2.0 speakers instead of 2.1? I have the Logitech 560 and I'd just use it as a 2.1 setup and keep to satellites in the closet but the sub for that system is just huge. I figure I will either buy a 2.1 system with a small sub or just get some 2.0 speakers and I will continue to use these Senns PX200 headphones for games. What do you guys think of going 2.0 vs 2.1. And what are some decent 2.0 speakers if there are any? I am looking for a max price of $150 though the Bose ones are $100 and I am sure they can't be all that bad.
 
Don't get bose. If you get good stereo speakers then you really don't need a subwoofer. The only reason computer speakers come with subwoofers is because the speakers are so fucking tiny that there is no way they can produce good sound so they offload the bass to a single subwoofer. Saves the manufacturer money and you get shitty speakers. The only thing I can recommend is to get a receiver and a pair of good bookshelf speakers or something. However, that'll probably go over your price limit and won't really help your clutter situation. Actually, come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen any computer/multimedia speakers with a woofer in both speakers.
 
Thanks for clearing up the reason that so many speaker sets come with subs. My theory was that a signle driver is caliabrated to a certain pitch and since both low and highs are far aways from each other, the satellites were calibrated at the higher frequencies and the sub filled in the rest.

The only reason I mentioned the Bose were because those were probably the only decent looking 2.0 speakers that I saw and Bose is usually expensive.

Those look good but they are as expensive as my 560s were and from the measurements, they are huge. Before the speakers I have now, I had the AL APT3 2.1 speakers. I could always go back to those since I always thought they sounded pretty good (I didn't have the Audigy 2 ZS then so I could be wrong on that count) and the sub was substancially smaller. I just used cheap sound back in those days so I really am not too confident in their superior sound.
 
I just picked up the MX502's. I love mine so far. But listen to them your self

Glad you like them. I don't think there are any stores around here that have those so listening to them yourself is not really an option. I just put the 560s back up in a 2.1 configuration. It minimizes the wire clutter. I guess I will just keep it like this for a while even though the gigantic size of the sub at my feet is one of the factors that I really hate.
