Some of you may have previously read my topics, I don't know, maybe you didn't. Just an overview:

X2 3800+
7800GT
A8N SLI Premium
2GB Corsair XMS (all timings are right)
NEC DVD/RW
250GB WD SATAII
Antec 550 TruePower II

Anyways, I've been having nothing but trouble, and I'm fairly certain it's the CPU. Before I send that thing back for a single core, I want to start completely over. If you guys had my hardware (and this is especially a question for those who have similar), what exactly did you do to get all of your programs to work? I can't even run Daemon-Tools, the damn thing crashes on the first disk every time

Now, here's what I have done:

M$ Hotfix
AMD Driver
Set Affinity
77.77 nVidia Drivers

Daemon tools refuses to work. The reason I believe this isn't necesarily a hardware problem is because RTHDRIBL and TWO Prime95s ran for 5 hours over night and did not crash. My highest recorded GPU temp was 69, which is _not_ that hot.

Frankly, I'm very pissed off at this PC, and I'm doubting if I should have even went with the dual core. Everyone keeps posting how that topic fixed their problems, but it didn't help me at all.

This time, I'm going to do everything in this order (unless you guys think otherwise):

- Format HDD, Install XP w/ SP2
- Install all needed drivers (chipset 6.70, display 77.77?)
- Install some apps that have been giving me trouble
- If the apps work, I'll be happy and continue stress testing, if they don't...
- ...start installing "patches", which means AMD driver and Hotfix
- If I still have problems, I'll try setting the affinity
- If it still gives me problems, I'll _try_ to get my friends 3000+, but I doubt he'll let me, can't blame him

- If the 3000+ works fine, I'm sending this damn 3800+ back.

can you try windows 2000 ? just to see if it is something in the O/S?

cant say i have any issues with damon tools on a dual opteron or dual xeon rig's @ work ever, both have had XP and server 2003 on them.

which version of daemon tools ?

i assume you rebooted after the request fot a SCSi driver install ?

Yea, I rebooted. Then rebooted again after it failed the first time. Then again. Then again. I don't have access to Win2k, but I can "get it" in a day or two

I tried both 4.03 and 3.47 (those may not be right, but it was the latest 4.0 and latest 3.0 on the daemon-tools.cc site). It's weird because when I first got the PC I installed it and it worked, which is really making me think it's a software problem. That's why I'm just gonna format and start all over.

One last question, will doing a quick format instead of full hurt anything, because I really don't feel like waiting on that...

EDIT:

Also, what drivers do you reccomend, 77.77 or 81.95 (w/ that registry fix, of course)? Or something not even related to either? What about those drivers not made by nVidia (I forget the name, but I'd used them before a looong time ago for some reason or another. Long before this build.).

drivers to use not sure.

a quick format should suffice, ihave done quickies when something messed and the new install was good -

A full format will actually check each sectors on the drive, so it can mark off bad sectors if they exist.

A quick format basically wipes the file allocation table and says "this drive is now empty"

if it means much to you, I had an Athlon64 3700+ San Diego in my box, with winXP sp2, and daemon tools 4.03 installed already....

I sold the cpu, and snagged a dual-core Opteron 165. plopped it in, and everything seems to be working fine. daemon tools works fine as well.

if worse rma the cpu it's not a dual core problem more like a defective chip that could happen with even single cores. I mean your the first i have seen that have had problems with daemon tools

is daemon tools only proggy your having problems with?

I run a x2 +4400 @ 2.5ghz (1.5v on air @ 35c under load) on the A8N SLi-Premium with 2 gigs of Mushkin Enhanced (2x1giggers) with 2 256meg 7800GTX's , and Audigy2 and 74gb raptor all running WinXP-64 tho ..I use the 64bit version of daemon tools without issue

I run the 6.90 drivers and the 83.40's

69c to me is a bit warm

maybe look in control panel under administrative tools > event viewer> system and see what (if any) errors are showing up there ..and that might give you more insight as to what is causing the crashes

can you run prime for 24hours ?
run memtest maybe ...?

I run a x2 +3800 at work in a linux server... my other linux server has the +3000 , I'd gladly trade yuh ..lol :p

No, all steam apps would freeze it on load, steam itself would freeze while looking through the server list o_O

NFS:MW, bleh, don't get me started.

And the GPU didn't stay at 69C, that was it's max. Average was around 65C I believe. How hot do your GPUs run? What are these 6.90 drivers? Are they beta? When were they released?

When I downloaded the 6.70s, that was the latest released

As of now (I just got done installing), I have 81.95s and 6.70s installed. I'm gonna install daemon and try installing NFS:MW and HL:2 and CS:S again.

EDIT:

Memtest: I've ran it for like 8 passes overnight and it found nothing. I've ran Prime95 (one on each core) and RTHDRIBL overnight, I'll leave it on again tonight and all day tomorrow since I have work and won't get home til 9:30 after school, that's like 18 hours or so. It lasted 5 hours fine though.

steam is all fuggered lately
I woudlnt use it as a gauge of system stability at all.
it crashes my box whether i over clock or not

Yea, I determined that after I ran dual Prime95 and RTHDRLIB for 5 hours. What games do you guys suggest I get that are pretty much "guaranteed" to work on X2 systems? I already have NFS:MW of course, but I don't know how reliable that is either since it never really ran right anyway, it'd always lock up my PC after a little bit of quick race, etc :(

Well, w/ the new install of XP, it's working (at least it did with my backup copy of NFS:MW). I'm now testing MW to see if it screws up. If it does, I'll try installing the hotfix. Maybe that will fix it if it messes up.

oops ..my bad .. I meant the 6.69's

my gpu's run 47c under load ..and thats the top card

system event viewer show anything?

maybe its a video card problem your having .. but I wouldnt think that would effect daemon tools tho ..hmm

if it was your processor .. I would think it definately crash during your prime runs

..do you have the Asus auto "lets overclock your video card maybe" settings disabled in bios?
I'd have to reboot and hop into my bios to see what it called exactly ..as it escapes me right now.

do you have some starforce product or similar installed?

there were some threads on the Marvell nic drivers causing lock ups on some peoples setups ..

just throwing stuff out there

Wow, how do you get them so cool? Is that 7800GTs at stock? EDIT: My GPU idles around 41-44C, so is that bad?

Anyway, I can't check system event because I already formated and reinstalled windows. And the Asus AI crap is all off. And as of now, with the fresh install, DT worked fine. And your thinking is the same as mine, if it was hardware, it would have surely failed with dual primes and stuff

I just played NFS:MW w/ no amd driver or hotfix or anything and it got stuck in the first minute of the quick race, so I'm going to try installing those things and see if that helps any...

they are GTX's and I use nv silencers that expel the heat out of my case ..I dont overclock my vidcards either

44c isnt bad at all

after your next lock up .. check the event viewer

[F]old|[H]

Well, after I installed the hotfix, NFS:MW didn't crash for an entire 5 lap race, when it crashed in the first 30-60 seconds last time. I don't want to say it's fixed, because as soon as I do it will freeze on me, but things are definitely looking better

Last post I'm making tonight, it's 12am here

Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know that _so far_ NFS:MW hasn't screwed up or anything and all I did was install 81.95 drivers (w/ the multicore crap taken out of registry), the 6.70 drivers, and the M$ hotfix. I even installed my 360 controller (w/ XBCD360 drivers, the M$ ones suck >_>) and it's work fine in NFS:MW as well.

I hope this fixes it, but I don't want to get too excited.

Anyway, I'm running dual prime95s and RTHDRIBL again tonight, temp is being logged and I'm going to leave it running _all night and tomorrow_ until 9:30pm-ish. Thanks for the help guys, but I might not be done yet :p

EDIT:

ThreeDee, what are these nV silencers or whatever? Is it a aftermarket heatsink? How much does one go for?

69c full load on that gpu isnt that hot, and lol that you thought it was the cpu :p

Hey, um, some questions.

1. I ran Prime95 and stuff and it worked fine. No errors or anything, but I noticed something. One of them had a _lot_ more done than the other one. Like, one was 1/3 of the way full, and the other was completely filled up with tests it had run. Does that mean one of my cores is bad/slow/crap?

2. I was just playing NFS:MW (I can't believe I thought it was fixed last night  ) and, as usual, it froze. I finished one quick race fine, started up another one, and it froze in the middle of it. Now, the entire screen was frozen, it didn't move, but the sound kept playing for a bit, started looping the same thing, then it would change and start looping that. So, it was like it was still trying to run or something, because some of the sounds were changing. After like 2 minutes, I rebooted and it's at desktop right now.

My temp logger is showing that it was mid-60s when it crashed, so it wasn't like burning up or anything. Where is that system event viewer you were talking about earlier? I want to check to see if anythings there.

Oh, and this is with the AMD Driver and hotscript and modded (regedit) 81.95 drivers. I do have a question though. Would software obtained by "questionable" means not work quite as intended to? I'm tempted to go buy some stuff to check it out, but I'm fairly certain the program I'm running that is crashing is good, because it worked fine on my other PC (1.7GHz P4, so it looked like crap, but it ran >_>).

Anyway, thanks for the help guys, even if it hasn't helped me so far ;_;

And I wanted to ask this as well:

Do Pentium D's and other dual core processors have problems like these? I haven't really heard many reports about PDs having these problems, but I haven't really looked either considering I have a X2. If not, I might just have to try and sell this off >_>

Hmm, I was just thinking. Could the one Prime95 have done less work because it was on the same process as RTHDRIBL (I didn't set affinity, but hey, I guess that could cause it, right?).

I'm gonna leave just P95 on tonight on each core to see if that was why one did so much less work, but I'm pretty sure that gpu program doesn't use much CPU power at all

Prime95 is single threaded....

If you want to load BOTH cores then you need to run TWO instances of it....

Also if you ONLY want to load ONE core then you need to set the affinity of the process

Um, I'm not a dumbass...

But I think I see why you think I didn't set the affinity of P95:

Hmm, I was just thinking. Could the one Prime95 have done less work because it was on the same process as RTHDRIBL (I didn't set affinity, but hey, I guess that could cause it, right?).

Well, what I meant by that was I didn't set RTHDRIBL affinity, I had one Prime on 0 and one Prime on 1 though. I was saying that maybe because RTHDRIBL probably ran on the "main" processor, the one that Windows and all the other stuff runs on, it may be slower. However, i don't know if that's true or not, which is why I'm running just P95s tonight since I'm sure my GPU is fine. If I get the same thing, with one of them barely doing anything, it's probably safe to assume something is wrong, no?

EDIT:

Can whoever moved this please move it back? The concern is with my X2 processor, not really software. It's specifically about software w/ the AMD X2, not general software.

Bah whatever, i just want to get this fixed ;_;
