I've decided to move to an Intel system after working with AMD since the K6's came out. I'm looking to run dual channel memory, and I was wondering if anyone here has ever had any expirience with Mushkin 256MB Green Level PC3200 memory?

FYI, future specs: Intel 3.0c, Gigabyte 8iPE1000 Pro (865PE chipset), 2x256 Mushkin 3200, 9700 Pro

EDIT: Newegg.com advertised the memory as "green level", but the Mushkin site says that the only "green" memory is SDRAM. I'll just assume that the memory is Mushkin's cheap 3200 sticks.

good setup, but ide go with an abit is7/ic7 or asus p4p800 board

I'm getting the Giga 8iPE1000 Pro off newegg refurbished for $53USD. The Is7 was only like $10 more, but my priorities usually go CPU > RAM > Mobo. I would've liked to get some PC3500 memory, but the Mushkin was too good of a deal. Also, the 8iPE100 and Is7 run the same chipset, so I figured they should perform (about) the same.

If you're going to be gaming alot, which looks like you are with that 9700pro, you should really get 1gb of ram. I noticed a pretty big improvement in most of my games when I upgraded from 512mb to 1gb, especially in battlefield 1942.

I recently went back to a gig and it makes all the difference if your running XP

Also the motherbaord is just as important , it is the foundation for god sake. Spend an exstra couple bucks it could save alot of aggrevation.

Agreed on the motherboard. Spend a little cash on it.

Also, BF1942 eats ram for breakfast, lunch, dunner, and tomorrow's breakfast.

I'm pretty confident about the 8iPE1000 Pro. It's based on the 865PE chipset, and this review had some excellent things to say about it.

BTW, see here for reviews on pretty much any mobo on the planet. The site is incredible.

I didn't find a single sub-par review on the Giga, but I have heard quite a few people that have talked about RMAing their ic7/is7/p4p800 multiple times.

Go For It. Get what makes you feel good. We did and boy am I happy this time. Tried what others told me where the best and I tried a few and the IC7 just does everything I want and sometimes more. Go figure.

Sounds good. But back to the original question, has anyone had any trouble with Mushkin in dual channel mode?

Dual Channel mode should not be a problem, but some of the cheaper Mushkin RAM are Winbond CH5 not BH5 or BH6 chips. The CH5 chips are fairly picky about what MB's they will run in.

I would first try to determine what chips are on the RAM sticks. (Mushkin is a good brand name, but even they can't make pigs fly)

why buy cheap refurb stuff that may give out on you in the near future and actually ends of costing you more money then if you would have bought a good motherboard in the beginning

same goes for RAM and any other thing you buy for your computer

"your computer, its worth it" :)

Funny you should ask...when I first got my IS7 I jumped on one of Mushkins "specials" (on their site) which was 2x 256PC3200 for $99. It not only worked dual channel on first boot but oc'ed very well. I later bought some Corsair XMS to see if I could oc more and couldn't even get it to the level of the Mushkin "green". Well, I continued using the Mushkin until a couple of weeks ago when one of the sticks died so....it's a crapshoot.;)

Reviews never can predict longterm reliability of a mainboard. That and Asus and Abit are a higher tier of manufacturer. And if your talking about buying a refurbished motherboard and the Abit is 10 bux more get the Abit. Come on man its ten damn dollars.

You here less about Gigabyte boards being RMA'ed because less people use them. You get what you pay for in life. Motherboards are no exception.

I just got everything today and just got done installing it. Everything went smoothly, installation-wise. The board came truely barebone; the only other thing it came with was the anti-static wrap. It was a little tricky trying to find all the little connectors without a manual.

Good to hear about your expirience with the Mushkin sticks. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a decent overclock without frying anything. I'm probably going to let the system run at stock speeds for a week or two to make sure everything works before messing with the FSB or timings.

Failure is not an option .......do it right Jacuzz.2004

I am using the Gigabyte 8IG1000 Rev 2 Motherboard and it is one of the finest I have ever used. Remember when you get either an 8IG1000 or 8IPE1000 Motherboard to get the Rev 2 motherboards for 865G or 865PE PAT options or grab the Rev 3 Motherboards for 8 Channel Audio

The gigabyte motherboard is rock solid and has served me well since the past 3-4 months. You can easily see my overclocks with the board which are I think quite decent. I can go higher but I do not want to pump voltage to my CPU and/or Ram since I lack additional cooling.

My timings are 2.5-3-3-5 which are awesome for the kindof overclock I have done w/ this motherboard. I suggest you grab an 8IG1000 (Pro) Rev 2 motherboard as it has both 875P level PAT and the quite nice overclocking options for 400/533/800 bus processors!

In the end your overclock will ultimately depend on your cpu and ram but I am sure this puppy can handle it quite well!
