Going wireless without router

I will be attending Ball State University (muncie Indiana) in about a week.. They have wireless internet access points all over the university but they have not gotten around to putting them in the dorm rooms. I was wondering if there is anyway to get wireless internet in my room without a router. they say the router will mess up the network, they said we have to get a 4 port switch. the only 4 port switches i have found that are wireless also include the router.. Is there anyway i could make my dorm room wireless without using a router.. Thanks

I attend North carolina state university, and I don't have a problem accessing the wireless network in my dorm room, even though my dorm is not wired. Depending on where your dorm is, how thick the walls are, and how for the closest wireless building is, you might be able to access it anyway. There is also a chance that someone else in your dorm will have a router, and you can mooch off their connection (even if it is against the rules)
 
If you and your roomate are only going to use the wifi, why dont you just get a WAP
(wireless access point), think of it as a wireless switch. If someone had a wired network
adding a wap will let wireless users on the network.
 
If you want both the wired and wireless access in your room, you can also get the router and just turn off the NAT functions, letting it act as a switch.
 
Using a router should not mess up anything unless their network is randomly assigning IP's to whoever is plugged into the wall.

Most universities (infact, all that I know of) have static IP's for each wall jack. Using a router shouldn't effect you or them.
 
i have a wireless router at my house.. a dlink 524.. will i be able to use that as a wireless switch..turning off the NAT fuctions.. what are these and how would u go about turning them off.. im thinking i will just take my wireless router with me and see what happens..also can u go into more detail about making a wireless access point and what i would need to make that happen?
 
My last Siemens WAP/router and my new Linksys WAP/router did/do not have the ability to turn off NAT. Or at least I can't find the setting for it.
