I have been pondering going raid0 unfortunately the 450gb raptor must have been in the floods Im not paying 200 or more for another especially when some reviews http://www.anandtech.com/show/1371 say no real world difference despite benches

the new samsung 840 pro looks excellent
I also like the magician software


I will wait till december to see that the ssd is reliable and the firmware is a little more mature

one question
do i have to continually update the firmware:)

Updating the firmware specifically in SSDs is usually a good thing as it either fixes small bugs which hinders performance or something similar to that, which also may include limiting read/write cycles to be fixed.

In simpler words, where updating the bios of your motherboard isn't exactly always necessary, but with SSD's and their firmwares, it's actually recommended.

Its like a motherboard and such. If there is an update, you can, but it will beat the crap out of the raptors. :)
Like in another thread, IMO, ~256gb is the sweet spot for storage.
 
I don't know from the original post if you were considering RAID0 just for the raptors or if you were thinking of doing it with the SSD's as well. If you go forward with RAID0 on the SSD's, MAKE SURE you have a complete backup of all your data before you try any firmware update. To do the update in the same machine, you would have to break the array (or move the drives temporarily to non-raided SATA ports) and then do the firmware upgrade. In the past (though not recently to my knowledge), depending on how significant the firmware upgrade was... Some of the firmware upgrades did a secure wipe of the drive (which would obviously be an issue). Also, as far as official releases, TRIM is only supported in RAID0 on intel z7 series chipset motherboards right now.
