You pervert! I'm talking about the IHS on my A64.

Yup, removing the integrated heat spreader from my cpu dropped temps 8c. Apparently My IHS was concave and was not allowing my block to seat properly. So I did some research and found others too, have had this problem.

Three ways to handle this "feature":
1) shut up and deal with it.
2) do some lapping on the IHS.
3) remove that sucker and call it a day

I figured 3 would be the easiest, er, maybe not. The glue AMD use to hold down the IHS must be the same stuff John Bobbit used to re-affix his, uh hmm, manly member. Took about 30 mins. of careful prying to remove the thing. But the efforts were well rewarded with a much cooler running cpu.

Wow, your IHS mustve really sucked to give you that much of a temp improvement.

just be careful about crushing the core, processors with an IHS need more mounting force than those w/o so if you go about applying the same pressure you could crush the core.

Mine takes alot to push it over 35C anyway, and drops back down to 30C pretty fast after...and taking the IHS off is pretty good way to be making the rice krispies, so I think not for me. :D

The IHS was literally concave. Didn't realize how bad it was till I put a straight edge on it. Bad boy was shaped like a canoe. Corners on it were sharp and pointy. I went to Micro Center to look at other A64's to see if the IHS's looked the same and they didn't. On the couple I looked at the corners appeared to have been filed or ground down. Guess they forgot to do that to mine.

On the mounting issue, I use my own waterblock with a bracket that aligns itself directly over the center of the core. Makes for very reliable and consistent mountings.

You sure do gat Bawlz
Well you won't need to do a lap dance on that CPU
I woulda started by lapping that puppy first

Damn, a canoe full of thermal paste obviously wouldnt conduct heat too well :p
At least youre going cool right now, nice waterblock once again, sweet jets on that thing.
