is this the correct way to do this?

uninstall red drivers
driver sweeper / cleaner
install new card
install green drivers

I thought I read in another thread on here that running driver sweeper or anything like that isn't really required anymore. Just uninstall/reinstall. Not that it's gonna hurt anything to do it, just might save some time. I personally don't run any driver sweeper stuff and never had a problem.

that seems to be the norm for 'upgrading' drivers now, going amd <> nvidia you'll still want to do a sweep.

I just uninstall when going from AMD to Nvidia. When going from Nvidia to AMD I always seem to need to driver sweep - Nvidia's shit never seems to actually uninstall.

Sounds right... ATI should have a "remove" tool somewhere on their website (they used to when I used ATI the one time) :D

Awesome! Thanks for the advice, I shall see how it goes later today when my green temporary card arrives

Hint of advice:

Uninstall Red drivers and any other ATI software, do not reboot.
Run driver cleaner pro for anything ATI
Safe mode boot
Driver cleaner pro again for anything ATI
reboot normally, install green drivers
reboot.
go get some runts

all completed without a hitch - this can be locked

thanks for the help guys :)
