Going from a PVA -> TN panel sucks

I 'upgraded' to a 22" Samsung 225BW from a 19" Samsung 193P+ on December 26th and I think I've officially decided to return the 225BW this weekend.

I don't know if anyone else has gone from a TFT/PVA based panel to a TFT/TN one recently, but I gotta say its more than a little disappointing :(. The colors feel washed out and oversaturated, viewing angles without 'yellowing' are very limited, and everything seems overly bright - thin black text on white backgrounds is especially hard to read.

Anyway. I really liked the extra screen real-estate afforded by the 1680x1050 resolution. I've decided that i want to get one of the Gateway S-PVA panels but don't know if I'm ready to push 1920x1200 on a 24" model... Has anyone tried the 22" Gateway FPD2275W?

I don't have any issues reading text on my 225BW, do u have an example?

As for washed out colours, by default yes, but after calibration its fine.

Part of this is personal preference. I had a PVA hated it and now have TN and like it better.

TN shifts more up down, PVA shifts more side to side. Side to side shifts bother me more.

All 22" so far have been TN. If you didn't like the first one, give up.

Brightness has nothing to do with panel type, it is backlight. My PVA 2405 was way to bright, eye burning bright even on zero. My TN is easy on my eyes.

I have two TN panels and one S-PVA.....I much, much prefer the S-PVA panel.

The noticeable difference between TN panels and PVA panels seems to vary by the individual. Myself, I could NEVER go back to a TN panel after using MVA and IPS panels.

I would look at monitors in the 24" range - AFAIK all of the 22" LCD models out today are using the same TN panel. Save the extra dough for a 24" and you'll be a lot happier in the long run. :)

22" at 1680x1050 native res are TN panels... but there are 22" 1920x1200 and 22.2" 3840x2400 panels which are definitely not,... with super expensive price tags.

The problem with Saving for the 24inch which I considering before I bought my 225, was looking at the BenQ 24 inch. For me to run games at the 24' native res I would need a faster card than my X800XTPE. So not only would I be spending $900 CDN on the benQ. I would also need a $500-$600 Videocard. So not really a tough decision, $449 on the samsung, or $1400-$1500 on a 24` and a new videocard. The choice is obvious!

I must agree 100%, but on a different level

I went from a TN panel (some acer 17inch lcd) to an S-MVA (32inch LCD TV), then to an S-IPS (3007wfp)

I couldnt stand the change from S-MVA to S-IPS, everything seemed all fadey (even after config), the whites werent white, viewing angles were very poor, etc etc.

I went with a westy 37incher with a s-MVA panel after less than a week of having the 3007 and couldnt be happier.

IMO TN < IPS < MVA < S-IPS < S-MVA

edit: idiocy, thanks ataneruo

Forgive me if I misunderstood your post, but didn't you mean

TN < IPS < MVA < S-IPS < S-MVA

?

In response to the people saying that all 22" Panels are TN, this is from the Gateway FPD225W manual:
Code:
Panel Type:
     22-inch viewable
     TFT active matrix S-PVA
     Anti-glare coating

Pixel Resolution:
     1680 x 1050 (native) (60 Hz)

Anyway. I played with the 24" version in the store and it looked leaps and bounds better than my Sammy 225BW and was closer to what I was used to with my Samsung 193P+. I'm not ready to spend fistfulls of cash keeping my video card capable of gaming at 1920x1200 though.

I have a hard time seeing the difference between the different technologies. I have a TN in my 225BW, but I also spend a lot of time with Apple displays at work, which I believe are S-IPS. I can see how the Apples are more expensive because of their build and the fact that they are Apples but I don't really see to much of a difference in terms of the panels.

By no means am I saying there isn't a difference, I just have yet to have it pointed out to me. Maybe if I got them side by side I'd see the difference.
