Works to a point. If you are going to be without internet for an extended number of days though, it won't let you play your games. You have to log in once every two weeks for a minute or two in order to keep using offline mode (at least, that's how it was a couple years back).
It is possible that I am prolonging periods between re-authentication by keeping WiFi off on my gaming laptop. I do know that if I turn WiFi on, Need for Speed Most Wanted (Origin) will require re-authentication, even if I do not load the launcher or game during the brief moment that laptop is online. The Last Remnant and LA Noire (steam) did not bother me with re-authentication during the past few months I was playing those games.
