It's allowing you to update it now. There is a decent amount to download so I would get started before the beta opens in a few days.
 
Oh I thought the beta started. When is the official start and how long is it?
 
Ao if you get the beta and all the updates, do you need to reinstall or make a new character when the game comes out?

Hmm, I don't know if you need to reinstall the game but your characters will be deleted at the end of the beta.

If you've preordered you can start playing May 17th and your characters won't get erased when it officially hits May 20th.
 
You will likely have to install the full client upon release. Your characters will definitely be wiped, so you start from scratch like everyone else. This goes for all beta testers.
