I just got an Acer Aspire One and the first thing i noticed after opening it is the highly reflective screen. We have quite a few laptops in my family and this is the first time i've seen a screen like this.

For a laptop that's so well designed, is there a purpose to it? I'd think it'd be harder to see than my previous laptop to see in the open sun. Right now, i'm seeing my face as clearly as the rest of the forum. I'm no a mirror guy.

They do it because people like shiny things. There's no real purpose beyond that.

Dark seems darker on a glossy screen.
Personally, I hate glossy screens due to the fact that I do not like to see my face when working/playing on my computer.
I want a monitor no a mirror... damn it!

Agreed; but I am the other way arround when it comes to my TV.

I think glossy screens are superior when you've got a controlled viewing environment, but it's beyond me why they're so common on laptops. That's got to be the worst possible application for a glossy screen.

This is so true. I work on a lot of other people's comps and when it is a laptop with a glossy screen I always say to myself, "I am glad this is not mine".

Because glossy screens bring out the colors on the display. I personally love glossy screens, I've been a big fan of them since I purchased a Sony Vaio LCD several years.

I now own the 24" LED Apple Cinema Display and I love it, I couldn't be happier with it. The colors on my Apple display pop, and are more vibrant than my Nec 2490.

I don't know what all the fuss is about the reflection's on glossy monitor's. I barely notice any reflections on my display. It's not any worse then a CRT. The issue has been way overblown in my opinion.

It a major issue on a portable.

Imagine browsing from a booth with the window on your side. You'll see your face and background more clearly than the text. That's exactly what happened while i was browsing [H] this morning.

Glossy coats helps blacks and color saturation.

Overall, I don't like glossy screens.

If you guys want oversaturation and inaccurate colors just buy a wide-gamut display and be done with it...

(or why just not crank up the saturation and contrast in the graphic-card settings? that would probably result in unprecedented levels of oversaturation)

I've always favored matte, but really like the glossy screen on my MacBook Pro. I wouldn't want my 30" Dell LCD to be glossy, though.
