Are there any LCD's in existence that have a "glossy" type screen, like on the macbooks? I have a Viewsonic VP930b and it gives me some serious eyestrain, but I could use my MacBook all day and be fine. I really don't know anything about LCD's as the Viewsonic is the only one I've ever owned.

of course there are. all that i know of

Acer F-20 IPS or MVA panel
Acer 2051W MVA Panel
NEC 20WMGX2-IPS Panel
any screen that you look that says crystalbrite, xbrite, opticlear on it.

Ok thanks, I wasn't sure because when I was shopping around before I never noticed anything about whether or not the screen was "glossy" and it seriously occurred to me like 2 minutes ago that maybe this is why one screen bothers me and the other does not.

yea i myself prefer the glossy screen. it just brings out the colors in everything.

I've got a 19" Sony Xbrite and it's been awesome since I got it a year or 2 ago. Colors pop and look more vibrant like the Macbook and no eyestrain here, either.

Me too...One of the greatest monitors I ever bought.

Question: Do you guys all use your computers in darkened rooms? I ask because I have a glossy screen on my notebook and I go crazy every time the lighting isn't just perfect. Way too much glare.

There is a skylight window about 30 feet behind me and that doesn't bother me at all. When I turn my celing fan light on about 10 feet behind me, you can only see a reflection if you look at it at a certain angle. So no, my room is not usually dark and the reflections don't bother me at all. I actually like glossy screens better because I think when a regular lcd has a light source behind it it gets washed out and hard to read.

im in a little nitch in the basement...perfect for crystalbrite :D they dont make xbrite lcds anymore do they?

I've used both screens in bright and dark rooms, and definitely prefer the glossy style.

And no, they don't seem to make Xbrite anymore except in laptops.

It looks like the 2051W is the way to go. I was hoping I could find something larger, but it'll do.

I use my F-20 in a room with drop down blackout blinds (more for the Texas heat than anything) and I agree that it would probably be annoying using a glossy panel if you couldn't control the light sources...no more so than a crt monitor though and everyone seems to have forgotten about that. Glossy lets the colors come straight through without being "diffused" by the anti-glare...that is why it looks better imo.

Does anyone know how the Acer 2051W compares with the NEC 90GX2? I like how the GX2 is brighter, but it's contrast ratio is less and for colors it only says "over 16 million." The viewing angle is significantly less - 170x155 as opposed to 176x176 on the Acer.

At the same time, however, I will probably use whichever I get alongside my VP930b which has a great picture (except the brightness), so I dunno.

What do you guys think? The VP930b is fine for gaming and such, but I do a lot of HTML and document editing, and it really hurts my eyes after a while. So I guess my priority is brightness - I really need something easy on my eyes that I can look at it for a few hours at a time.

I have the 17" Sony Xbrite and it is awesome. Crystal clear and sharp. I can't remember what I paid for it 2 years ago probably an arm and a leg by today's standards. Yes the screen is very glossy.

It is the HS74P.

The Xbrites don't seem to be available anymore.

I went with the NEC-90gx2. Got it today, switched from Viewsonic VP930b. I really love the brightness on the NEC - between the glossy screen and the 400 cd/m2 it's much brighter and easier on the eyes.

The colors quality doesn't seem as good as on the Viewsonic, but right now I'm much happier. At some point I'm going to run them both side-by-side but that will be a while, as I will have to do some significant re-arranging for that to work.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone :)
