I am going to be giving my old computer to my friend...he has a pentium 1 133 mhz ,,and its his 16th birthday and litterly he has no form of entertainment.. 2 Tvs and a dvd player..and that pile of crap Pc....

anyways to my point ..my old computer isnt exactly fast in any aspect.. specs

amd athlon 1700 ( 1.47 ghz , 266 fsb , 256 cache Possibly could be one of the mad Ocing 1700s... never felt like ocing it)
ati 9000 pro 128 megs
Msi board .. 4x Agp im too lazy to look for model number)
1 stick of 512 pc 2100 samsung cas latency 2

ok and hes getting half life 2 which i am very sure it barley runs on it ...Cs:S runs 30 fps while not moving looking at the ground and ..16 to 25fps any other time....

he is gonna be getting a 9600 xt .,, and a new mobo if it is really nessicary ,, you guys think it needs more than jsut a new video card?

edit : sorry for the crappily layed out thread

I wouldn't call that slow by any means! that system is quite nice I wouldnt mind having that as my secondary system by any means! if you must upgrade the mobo look at the chaintech nForce 2 ultra 400 board, 7njl1 I believe... it has 400 fsb max... you could probably oc that proc to 333 fsb, and if you got another stick of ram, you could run it in dual channel mode, enhancing system performance even more.

That would make one heck of a system with just these couple of things done to it.

Slap a new video card in there and it should run quite acceptably. Another 512MB of RAM and a little OC action, and you'd be doing very, very well.....

Just make sure he informs you everyday of what the 'overclocked' temperatures are based on MBM or something while you're away in your own house so things don't go wrong. :-x

I would say a 9600non pro or 9550 would be a good match. If the motherboard is working ok it might be a waste getting a new one, incase the processor doesn't overclock for crap you just wasted money.

well only reason i recommend a 9600xt to him is casue he is gonna be getting half life 2 .. and already is a Cs player .. So Cs:source will be the main thing
