My girlfriend was having computer problem when she added a new videocard (gforce fx 5700 le) {meh it was a gift } anyway it seemed to go away when she bought a new powersupply, It worked for a short period of time with the new powersupply.. then all of the sudden it started to spaz out. it will no longer boot into anything but safe mode or else it will not display properly, or at all. She has experience what I have diagnosed as artifacting on occasions right before the picture completely blacks out. so now she is stuck in safemode and cannot play WOW with me.

After many attempts to be sure what it was i have decided that the videocard must have somehow overheated and been permenantly damaged. I say this because i cant think of anything else that could do this. What makes this diffacult is that she goes to college away from me so that I cant instantly have access to it

What power supply did she replace the old one with? Did she try putting back her old video card?

as far as i know the new psu was adaquate to sustain her videocard ftil it got all weird. She isnt a tech person like us so i doubt she even know where her other card is

what the 2nd poster was suggesting (i think), is that the power supply you may have replaced the old one with took a crap on you. i'm curious which power supply you had before, and the one that's in there now.

Like i said I cant go see for myself. It seems to boot fine in safemode. would that explain this behavoir? Ive never had a psu do that ( I must have always got the good ones)

uninstall video drivers....

restart..

install new ones.

ive had old drivers do weird stuff when no uninstalled properly.

i know its a noob solution and probably wont work.. but give it a try.

you might also want to check tht the fan on your card is still spinning. Sounds like what happens when it heats up it craps out.

tried that aswell, She says the fan is blowing air out of the exhaust

tell your online girlfriend to get someone who lives near her to check her box out.

it might be a little tight in there but he should have some room to work his magic. he probably just needs to play around with the switch a while to get her box turned on.

has she found anyone else to help out yet?

I can't believe this thread, lol.

Anyway, can you ask her what exact psu she had last, and what she put in now? It could make a difference, if she first had a raidmax psu, and then went to an x-connect vs her going from a low power antec to a higher powered antec.

When u replace a crappy PSU with another crappy PSU that = problems. Obviously if the new PSU made it work fine for a bit then clearly its a PSU problem but the new PSU is crap too so it only worked good for a short bit till it got over loaded for too long and took a poop! :p

we all should head out there and help out. the more the merrier isn't it?

yeah i know. 5 heads are better than 2! Example: one time my friend's mom's box was so screwed after we had only 2 guys working on it, but i recruited 3 more and everything worked out. turns out the water cooling had sprung a leak and it was soaking in there. but it dried up after we all had a go at it.

Yes yes why 3 when you can have 4....or why have 4 when you can have thousands!
Send her to the [H]ard forums! That is the reason for the name right?

that's the problem right there... mom's shouldn't have watercooling! That's a tech support nightmare waiting to happen... kinda like sending the Geek Squad to come fix your computer...

i dunno she'd probably like it if the entire squad came and worked on her box.

Everybody knows the GeekSquad is really secret geek fetish male strippers that are hidden from the public's eye. Haven't you noticed geek squad is all male...*dramatic music*

That lost comment has actually made me laugh. Geek Squad is a joke.

If her card runs fine in safe mode thier is no way its the psu. Most likely a bad card. I have a 6800nu that had crap ram on it and it had similiar symptons. Try jiggling her harddrives a little bit while your push on her ram. Make sure her floppy drive is completly full while you jam on her reset switch..

Sorry couldn't resist

Pretty cool your GF likes to play games with you. Mine does too but not games like WoW or CS: Source.

Women tend to like MMOs. I personally hate MMOs on a totally unrelated reason ( :( Diablo II ).

Diablo's not really an mmo, or an rpg, whatever They want you to believe.

Anyway, let's sticky this thread...after your mom.

Women liek MMORPGs b/c of the social aspect. That way they can talk to so many people it's not even funny. Think about it.

Just make sure you have them play a support class. It's complete exploitation of their faith, but they won't know, and it'll help you ;)

Yeah, but they're people I'd rather not talk to in the first place. Then again, women are illogical. More so than teachers.

haha, just think what the [H]orde would do to her.

Well, we'd be busy for a while we got her running, and let just watch her fold for a bit, then be back to check on her situation in a while.
