when i started out tearing the HSF off of my card last night, i had originally planned on replacing it with a PAL6035. i was going to use the old spring mounting screws from my other Alpha HSF, the PAL8045, but the screws don't fit through the mounting holes.

using the stock cooler with Shin Etsu on the core and no TIM on the RAM, i am able to do 540/610 in 3dmark2k1. i'm sure i'll be able to do more as soon as i get everything setup correctly.

this is with a 120MM fan i just installed over the card.

if you compare the HSF to the one i posted previously, you can see where it extends. i don't like the design. Asus uses this same HSF on one of their cards, and a similar setup with heatpipes on another X800 card. compared to my old Visiontek X800XT(non-PE) the HSF Is about 1/2" taller and wider than the reference ATi design.

as you can see, the TIM on the RAM looks kinda like a marshmellow with a peice of pink rubbery bandage like material stuck over it. i think someone at the factory forgot to remove the plastic from one side. before i removed the TIM, i was getting artifacts on the desktop at 600MHz. i also cleaned up the mess of thermal compound around the GPU and my temps dropped by about 2c.
 
and now i've got the PAL6035 mounted. there is also a 60mm fan on there too, but i hadn't installed it for this pic.

my temps dropped about 5c, which in turn will give me a better overclock. hopefully.

i ended up finding a huge selection of screws at the farm store here in Canby of all places!
 
With my gigabyte X800 XT PE, I would hit low 70s at stock speeds with the reference cooler. By switching to marginally performing Koolance water cooling, my max temp w/ the core at 560MHz was 47C. So, yeah basically the stock cooler sucks.

Looks good what you did though. Is your max temp only 5C lower? I would imagine with such a tall cooler you could remove more heat than that.
 
i never tested my load temps. i just looked at my idle temps before and after the new HSF.

i'm sure my load temps have gone down quite a bit, but i don't think it will be as dramatic as yours.

did your XT-PE HSF make contact with the RAM on the front side of the card?
 
Yes those silly super thick thermal pads made contact but I also had the band-aid like material on them.

I bought some copper ramsinks and AS Ceramique though and all is better :)
 
i think i'll go without RAMsinks for the time being. i have some Tweakmonsters and ASTE if i need them, but i've found that GDDR3 doesn't usually do better with a HS.

what kind of memory clocks are you getting on your card?
 
Well, before my water pumps decided to take a crap I was reaching about 590MHz... nothing special by any means, but I also didn't really have too too much in the airflow department.
