Gigabyte EX58 Extreme - space issues

Ok, I have one of these boards in an Antec P180 and very nice it is too. My problem is that I am unable to use the last PCI-E slot to fit a GTX 285 in because the heatsink is too wide - there's not enough space between the slot and the top of the PSU compartment.

This effectively means that, running 2 GTX 285s as I do, I have to tolerate high temperatures, especially on my primary one, as I have to run both cards in the PCI-E slots nearest the CPU - which means they are right bang next to each other and I can't get custom coolers because there's not enough space for both - yes there would be on the lower one, but not the primary PCI-E slot.

Does anyone else run these cards on this motherboard in that case? Is there any viable solution to this problem? I think the PCI-E bus etc are all down a space in general on this board to accommodatef the custom chipset cooler and the extra 4 USB sockets in the IO bay.

But I need to cool down my precious GTX cards - running at about 85 degrees isn't good.

Any advice?

I'm not running a X58 in my secondary box, but I removed the plastic slide cover that allows cables to pass through to the PSU on my P182. Gave a little more room under the 285 in it.

Is it too tight or not useable in the bottom PCI-E slot?

I know the slider you mean - problem is if you remove that then the heat from the PSU rises and heats up whatever cards are above it.

I might have a look regardless and see how much room that gives me, thanks for that idea.

The intake fan from my HX1000w is facing upward. It helps exhaust any heat removing the cover might cause.

Either make space, go water, or get a new case. That case is big buy not set up well for SLI. I know from personal experience.

That is a horrible case for SLI and Crossfire and I'd even state horrible for watercooling (well a clean install at least).

Maybe a HAF 932 case? I built a system recently for a friend using a HAF 932.. it's huge.. very spacious and your cards would love you for it. Also worth noting that the fans are massive and thus spin slowly for low noise.

If all is lost just take a dremel to your P180 and cut a whole the size of the cooler. Sand down the edges with a file and then use a rubber sidding material to cover the sharp edges.

I looked at the HAF, and while I think it's pretty ugly looking, it seemed to have the space needed, till I saw this picture:

The PSU, bottom left, is in the same place as it is on my P180, and going by that image, the bottom of the motherboard gives almost no room between itself and the PSU.

Isn't that precisely the problem I have here?

Thanks.

x58 mobos generally come in three styles of spacing pci-e. the first is yours with three evenly spaced ones. the second style is mine (see sig) where the top two are spaced further apart. lastly is the usually more expensive layout like the evga classified that has four slots and great spacing on the top three.

that bottom pci-e is tough on the first two options. i am installing a third gpu for physx and had to order the fastest clocked single slot cooling card i could find. luckily my case is very well ventilated and heat has not been an issue.

I've had a really good look in my case, and there is no way to accommodate cooling and SLI in it on this motherboard thanks to the lack of space at the bottom above the PSU compartment.

I've had a really good look at the HAF 932 and tbh all the reviews seem to indicate exactly the same problem (which I posted in the picture above) - that the PSU, at the bottom of the case, is far too close to the bottom of the motherboard to accommodate a second GTX 285 in the last slot, never mind one with custom cooling.

Surely there is a solution to this?

The HAF 932 can have it's PSU installed on the top. It goes either way and is up to you.
