Gigabyte 9600XT Problems

I am having problems with a recently-purchased (1 week ago, from Newegg) Gigabyte Radeon 9600XT (running new ATi 4.1 drivers). ATi VPU Recover reports an error at seemingly random times, and then a few minutes later, the game freezes (ATi VPU Recover is obviously trying to fix something), and the system crashes. This has happened in Jedi Academy, Counter-Strike 1.6, and another game that I can't remember ATM (I did a complete format to make sure nothing else was causing the problems).

Has anyone had similar problems with this card, or the ATi 4.1 drivers? Everything on the computer is running stock speeds, no Overdrive, etc.

System:
AMD XP 1800+
Gigabyte Radeon 9600XT
ABIT NF7-S 2.0
WD 160GB SE Hard Drive
El-Cheapo 52x CDRW
512mb GeIL DDR400 RAM
Powmax 400watt PSU

I can.

I got the Sapphire flavor a week ago and have the same issues. Also, lines across the screen when using DVI. Turning off/on the LCD fixes but c'mon. I spent $160 for a card, don't do that to me.

My geforce3 ultra never bothered me due to drivers like this ATI card has. Blown away the OS and reinstalled even. Going to try the 9800 pro, but if it has the same driver issues, bye bye ATI.

Get your drivers straight then I'll go ATI. What's the use of a superior card if the drivers freak more than your gf does at you. I need less drama.

Hmm. Well, I uninstalled the 4.1 drivers and installed the older 3.10 drivers. So far, so good (although I haven't sat and played for a full hour or 2 yet). Perhaps it is a driver problem... (it sure as hell better be a driver problem, because I don't want to wait a week or more to RMA the 9600XT).

It's true... hella good cards are no good if the drivers spaz out.

Aha! I found a fix for it (after stfw'ing for 9600xt crashing). It seems that ATi made a big OOPS! Set your troublesome 9600-series card to 4X AGP (not 8X) in the SMARTGART section of the advanced settings, or in your system BIOS. Problem solved. Voila. End of story. I can't find the linky again, sorry.

How does that affect performance? Another Microsoft sounding fix :)

Going from 8x AGP to 4x AGP....there is about a 1% difference in performance.
