I was talking to a friend about upgrading my processor, I have been out of the whole game for a while and wanted the best bang for the buck. He recommended

And unlocking it to a quad core. Fact is, I have no clue if my motherboard has the ability to detect and unlock additional cores. It's a Gigabyte 880GM-UD2H. Right now I am running a Athlon II X2 245 so an upgrade is well needed :p.

yes it does. you just need to set the EC firmware in M.I.T. to hybrid and ACC to auto. it will unlock them if the locked cores are stable. its a 50/50 chance the processor will unlock. if it does remember you might have to bump the voltage up so i'd recommend the first time you unlock them set the cpu voltage to 1.4v just to give you the best chance possible to unlock on the first try.

so far from what i have read, the F8 bios breaks the unlocking support so check to make sure you are not using those bios.
