Ok here is my situation. I have finally decided to go with a 6870 and as usual the %&$& Asus is sold out. Newegg has their 10% coupon going right now. I don't think the Asus is coming back into stock before Friday, because I got an alert that it was in stock today and it is already sold out again. So the question is, should I wait for the Asus or just go ahead and get the Gigabyte 6870? I know the Asus has the Aluminum plate, but does it really help or is it just a marketing gimmick?
 
I would just go with the Gigabyte. They are the same reference designs, and the samse style coolers. The only reason to go with an Asus v. another company at the moment, is you prefer the brand/warranty/support they offer.

You could hold out to the very end to see if you can get the Asus, and then just grab another brand if they don't com back in stock. You run the risk of not having other brands in stock if you wait. Over the last week, I've seen Sapphire, Asus, XFX, and Gigabyte out of stock.
 
I have the Gigabyte. I bought it mostly because it has a 3-year warranty. I have had no problems with it so far. Nothing to really complain about.

That is exactly what is making me reluctant. On the other hand I don't know if it is worth driving myself crazy over. I have yet to see a single review that indicated that the temps were actually lower like they claim.(I am not saying it doesn't, I just haven't seen any proof yet.) Most of the reviews just site Asus's numbers, which are obviously going to be biased.
 
I have the XFX 6870 and i personally dont see any big difference compared to results reviewers had with the Asus one.....i would say wait, and pull triggger on a card on the last day.
 
You'd need to find a reviewer who compared the ASUS 6870 to another 6870 in the same setting.
I don't know if any of those exist.

I am pretty sure they don't...I have spent hours trying to find something on Google and all of them either leave the Asus out or only review the Asus. *Bangs head on desk*

Oh and Newegg just went bumped both the Gigabyte and the Asus up to $259.99. Stop recommending the 6870 to everyone your driving my prices up! *shakes fist* lol

What absolutely kills me is I had the Asus 6870 in my cart, but I was still not decided on the 6870 yet. I spent about an hour researching and went back to purchase and it was sold out. Does anybody know a good way to take forehead prints out of a desk? lol

lol, need some wood polish and a furry buffer? (another question is, how do you get the desk print off your forehead... :D )

The same thing happened to me when these things came out. I was up friday morning and I placed the asus in my cart. did some research for an hour and boom, from 7am to 8 am, they all sold out. It was the first and only 6870 to sell out that day. Then the Gygabite joined it a few days later.

I like Asus for having the aluminum head sink and the slight OC so i purchased it while it was still at MSRP. (also got the 10% off) It is one of the few cards that sells out in minutes.
 
Hmm now the XFX is back in stock and it is only like $3 more than the Gigabyte after the coupon.(It has cheaper shipping so most of the $10 difference is negated by that.)

Edit: I pulled the trigger. I got the XFX for $244.98, so all in all a pretty good deal. You can't go wrong with a double lifetime warranty.

Edit2: I got in just before they bumped the shipping up to $7.87. I have been watching their cards all day and they are bumping the prices on everything! The XFX Black Edition is up to $299.99!!

I'm just waiting for the aftermarket 6870's to start showing up and/or 6970 to drop.
I can't stand the reference cooler designs, even though ASUS uses some better parts. *sigh*

I don't know why the 6850's got the nice coolers, but no love for the 6870's...
And yeah I see the prices going up everyday. I hope they're not too high when I'm finally ready
 
The asus 6870's aluminum shroud isn't going to make a dramatic difference compared to others imo. Even on their website they specifically say it's the shroud SURFACE temps that is lower.

AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHEN WILL THE PRICE HIKES STOP?!

I don't mean to be rude, but I could care less about a lifetime or even double lifetime warranty. Who really keeps cards that long, 2-3 years tops for me.

I don't really care either, but it doesn't hurt to have it when the difference is only a few dollars. Plus it might help the resell value. I usually upgrade my computer every 2 years as well though.
 
I had an ASUS 6870 and it's no different performance and cooling wise than the others. Get the Gigabyte, same warranty terms.

The resell value is a valid point. I don't always sell my older cards though. Right now I am keeping my 4870 as a backup. But I did sell my 8800 GTX to go to the 4870. I pretty much go for price, when I do my crossfire, I will most likely hold out for another Asus, just for the OCing possible match and being able to use the CCC to do it.

Yah and like I say the difference was miniscule or I wouldn't have done it. The Gigabyte was $241.86 and the XFX cost me $244.98. I will pay $3.12 for a lifetime warranty lol.
 
I bought the Gigabyte 6870. Runs just fine & 3-year warranty. Good thing I pulled the trigger when the price was $229.99, plus 10% off with $7.87 shipping came to $214.86 just last week! The prices are insane now! It's a scam that NG is charging so much within 7 days or so. Supply & Demand sucks some times! I would have grabbed the XFX version, but it's was $20.00 more then the Gigabyte, but shipping @ the time was only $1.99 (XFX version) Now they are all $7.87 for shipping.
 
I couldn't take it...The GTX 460 is so much cheaper and when OC the performance was just too close to the 6870. There were just too many complaints about the noise of the 6870 and too many praises of the quietness of the GTX 460. So needless to say I cancelled my order and I am going to get a GTX 460.

Edit: I got the Gigabyte GTX 460 SOC for $205. Then there is a $20 rebate that brings it down to $185. On top of that you get HAWX 2 free.(Not that great I know, but hey it's free) I just couldn't see $60 worth of difference in the 6870. Yes it is ever so marginally faster, but the Gigabyte is a lot quieter and cooler.(My PC is pretty silent and I would like to keep it that way)

Siryak: Seems like that Gigabyte 460 SOC has had some real issues. Read all of the post on NG. Looks like a TON of returns. I say good luck with it just the same. I must admit my Gigabyte 6870 w/ 10.10 drivers have been fine for me. Of course I'm not o/c @ the moment.

I got the card from Diamond and it works great. I am getting pretty much 60 in everything to do with Fallout New Vegas and Star Trek Online. Havent played anything else, recently.

That's a great price. I never saw them at 229.99, but got my Sapphire 6870 for 239.99 with the 10%. It was $220 shipped.

I know it has issues. That is why I didn't get that one. :p I got the Gigabyte GTX 460 SOC(Super Over Clock). Pretty much every review I read on this one said it was the best GTX 460 they had reviewed hands down. It is a completely different design from their other model, so hopefully it won't have the same issues.

Lol no need to apologize. Honest mistake and you were just trying to help. :D Also I love the fans to. The reviews are saying that they are dead silent and keep the card ridiculously cool.

MISMCSA: Yeah it was (gone now) When NewEgg started it's 10% off on 11/4 the Gigabyte 6870 was @ 229.99. At the end of the day it was bumped to $239.99. Now it's $259.99 (last I checked) I'm glad & didn't hold back when I had the opportunity.

Damn you luck SOB lol. I was about to order my gigabyte 6870 at that time but I thought "nah, why no wait until tomorrow" and then I had to pay 245 per card + 10 dollar shipping... it is still a good deal though.

But the price went up again and both cards (asus and gigabyte) are 260... I can feel the gripping pain on ones balls if one were to buy it now

Master: Yeah...The 6xxx series didn't take long to jump in price. Now...I think it's semi-crazy! I mean...You can buy a Nvidia 470 GTX OC (power hog) for around the same price as a 6870! I'm sticking w/ AMD, but if I was to buying right now, I would have to give the 470GTX a very hard look!

Yah the price hike lost me as a customer...it doesn't offer a big enough performance jump over the GTX 460 at that price point.
 
No it's doesn't. But....Once the 69xx comes out, you'll see a price drop. AMD has too! Nvidia is doing it's best with the 460/470 core. I have an Asus AMD MB, so....I went with the 6870. No regrets...just that the prices are not as competitive anymore.

I don't think the prices are going to come down until people quit buying them like they are the last breath of oxygen on Earth. Until then why drop the price when you are selling more than you can make anyway? If I was in their position I would hike the prices too.
 
I've been looking at the 6870's as I want to give eyefinity a shot (I can get 3x dell 2005's by rearranging my rigs) but the price is so damn high now. I ended up getting the ECS 460 1gb with the diesel Arctic Cooling heatsink for 138 after promo's and rebates. This thing is dead silent while heavily overclocked and will last until the 6970's drive prices back to reality and there are non reference coolers out.
