Gigabyte 5870 oc troubles

I have a gv-r587ud-1gd that keeps quite cool idle and under load. I've tried overclocking it using afterburner, ccc, and amd gpu clock tool. Every time I try to oc, my screen goes completely black, and never returns to normal. I am then forced to manually reboot only to find the stock clocks back on my card.

My card had a crappy bios which I flashed to the new gigabyte bios upon arrival of the card, but I didn't test the card overclocking wise before the flash.

This is my first attempt at OCing a gpu, am I missing something obvious, or does this just happen to some cards.

This. Also, what and how much are you trying to overclock by when you get the black screen? core? RAM? 5MHz? 200MHz?

I've tried CCC, and it blacks out with ANY overclock of Core or Ram.
