I was goingt to buy my best freind a new mid-range video card for his b-day, becuase he really cant afford it right now and needs an upgrade badly, which one do you guys think I should get him between only these cards......

6600 AGP
X700 AGP (DDR2)
9800 Pro

I'll be getting the card from the egg...

6600 would be best, and the x700 isnt avaliable in AGP afaik. but if price is a factor, 9800p

Get a 6600GT - there are several AGP ones at Newegg under $150 and they are great cards for the money.

I say 9800 Pro cuz they're the cheapest, rape the X700, and tie the 6600GT. :D

Sound like a kick ass friend.

THe biggest gift I got for my birthday was a 20 dollar bill....Cheap bastards

6600GT, no question. A 9800pro won't do shader mark 3.0 or HDR in games.

Hehe.. shader model 3.0 my good man... and yes, i second the tracking down a 6600GT.

People! Listen to him! It's not a 6600 GT. Not a GT! Only a 6600 plain! The 9800 pro undisputedly wins over the 6600 plain.

Wrong, 9800 won't even render SM 3.0 or HDR in games, the 6600 will at least give him the option.

Spend the extra, and get him a 6600GT.

yes, i was duped(or blind or stupid or both) if you can afford the little extra bit 6600 GT. I got an eVGA brand in my shuttle g5.......plays FarCry like a bandit.....supports HDR. The graphics are very very good....and yes it is an AGP model.

Dude.... DUDE... DoD: Source.. 9800 Pro can do HDR in it, and you don't just 'render SM3.0'. If it's between a 6600 Vanilla and a 9800 Pro, you'd have to be the biggest !!!!!! ever, or just plain stupid to get the 6600Vanilla. yes, it'll give him the option.. will it be playable? HELL NO!

I do agree with you though, spend the extra to get the 6600GT.

er...
the 6600gt beats the 9800 by at least 10% at worst case and it supports pixel shader 3.0 and SLI.

this poll is going to be somewhat unaccurate and unbeneficial, since all nvidia boys will vote for the 6600 right off the bat, and the ATi boys will vote for either of the two ATi cards

not really. im a pretty big NV fan at this moment, but i think the 9800p is the better bet in this situation.

i would cough up the extra few bucks for a 6600 gt, in the long run it is a much better card and it won't let you down. i love both of mine (well one is my room mates, but i built his rig for him, so i consider it partly mine ;) ) i guess i should say we are both very happy with ours ;)

That's like saying a 5200 can do DX9.

The 6600 GT seems to outperform the 9800 once you start turning up AA and AF. Here is a link to a page with a ton of games benchmarked on the 6600 GT and the 9800 Pro/xt, in addition to a few other cards. It's a 20 page article that will load as a single page:

http://www.firingsquad.com/print_article.asp?current_section=Hardware&fs_article_id=1581

Here is a pretty explanatory quote from the last (20th!!) page of that article:

"With its eight-pipeline architecture and 256-bit memory interface, the RADEON 9800 PRO delivers very good performance, trumping all previous mainstream solutions at the $200 price point. That is until the GeForce 6600 GT AGP arrived.

The GeForce 6600 GT doesn’t boast a 256-bit memory interface, but thanks largely to its screaming 8 pipeline graphics core which operates at 500MHz, the GeForce 6600 GT was able to outperform the RADEON 9800 PRO 128MB in our testing, in fact the 6600 GT was actually more competitive with the RADEON 9800 XT, which is a 256MB graphics card that retailed for $500 this time last year. It’s pretty remarkable to see how far the mainstream segment has come in such a short period of time."

Can't the 6600 be unlocked to a GT?

By the way, can I be your friend? Will you buy me video cards?

A 9800 pro would be a nice gesture, and probablly be best bang for buck, as its right on par with the 6600, or sometimes a little faster.

Thanks everybody for the help, Power Color has a X700 AGP 256MB DDR2 8 pipe card on newegg, does a 9800 pro really kick it's ass tha badly? Oh and b4 somebody think's I'm an ATI f.b., nada, every card I own is Nvidia, my buddy is just more of an ATI fan, but at this point it doesnt matter.

yes. the x700 is choked by the 128bit mem bandwidth, the 9800p is not, it has 256bit. 9800p all the way.

the x700 is basically a 9500p with 256mb ddr2.

Since you do not have 6600gt in your poll, I say go with the 9800 pro also. 9800 pro is a fantastic card for the price. Now if you were to up it to a 6600GT, then yes, the GT would be your best bet.

please. Like a 6600GT could power either of those at any kind of decent settings. 9800pro gets my vote.

And the memory on the video card doesn't matter much. (I mean it would if it had 16mb or something, but they don't make those). If the card isn't powerful enough to use textures that are that big, then you are just wasting your money. With those cards, I wouldn't spend money on something over 128mb.
