ghosting from ide to sata?

i have a maxtor 300gb sata150 hd on the way...

can i just simply ghost the hd from my ide 120gb to my sata 300gb?

or do you recommend me to start from scratch, format, and install everything
 
Do you have the SATA drivers installed?

If not you might have to do a repair install to get XP working on the new drive.

Motherboard CDs are typically worthless, as the drivers are usually updated by the time you get it. Load the latest ones, and try it out. If it doesn't work, you still have the source drive intact. I've gotten this to work on Intel chipsets, but they have the best SATA native compatibility.
 
I just did this, moving from a 120GB Maxtor IDE to a 250GB WD SATA. Install your new SATA drive and boot the machine normally. Then install any necessary drivers and even quick format the SATA drive if you just want to be sure it's working perfectly. I took that time to run HD Tach to check speed. Now get yourself Norton Ghost 9 or 10 (I used 9, but 10 is out now I think) and do a disk copy. Ghost will automatically expand your new SATA drive's partition to use 100% of its free space. After the clone process completes shut down and unplug the IDE drive. Go ahead and boot from the SATA drive now! If you want the IDE drive back in the system, make sure you change boot order in your BIOS so it doesn't start up off the old IDE drive first.

You might want to read up a bit more on drive imaging. Any data/partitions you've created on the SATA drive were overwritten during the imaging process. It's always best to use a blank, unpartitioned, unformatted drive when using Ghost. When you choose the destination drive, you can configure the size of the partitions there.
 
If all you want to do is replicate a boot drive, Maxtor should have a utility that will do that.

I've used utilities by both Maxtor and Western Digital to clone boot drives, including multi-partition structure.

As long as both devices are recognized and you follow Maxtor suggestions, shouldn't be a problem. Don't forget to set the new drive to bootable drive in BIOS after the clone.

Yes, I realize that formatting the drive itself will not affect the post-clone setup and that it will be overwritten. My purpose for formatting the drive, as stated in my post, was simply to make sure things were working well and run benchmarks BEFORE starting the imaging process. Then you can image away knowing full well that the drive is healthy.

I misunderstood then...my fault ;)
 
if your 120gb has no software problem then cloning it to the 300gb is the fastest way to do it. This will save you time and trouble of isntalling the new drivers and all other softwares. Make sure your 120gb w/ all its software are 100% working as when you clone all software conflicts and viruses/spywares will be carried over to the new drive.
 
What motherboard are you using? If it's got a SATA controller that is natively supported by Windows XP (NF4 comes to mind) then you should be able to just do a ghost and boot. XP recognises the new drive, asks for a restart, and that's it.
