I just got a new SATA HD to replace my dying IDE one and I'm not sure if I need to go out and buy norton ghost. What are the best programs to use when ghosting (or whatever will allow me to use my new HD as the bootable one without re-installing windows)?
 
I recommend Ghost out of personal experiance but there are many options out there. Do a Google search for drive imaging and you'll find a plethora of options. Whatever you choose, make sure it can resize paritions and do a sector to sector copy.
 
I might end up buying norton ghost, but I was hoping someone had first hand experience with a free program.
 
All of the major manufacturers provide a free utility that will copy the old drive onto the new one. Ghost is a nice full featured app, but I wouldn't get it just to copy a drive.

The other thing you need to find out is if your SATA controller has native drivers or not. If not, it may not be bootable once you clone the old drive to the new one.
