My system is sluggish randomly after I boot. In other words it runs great sometimes and not others. Problem lies with the overclock but I don't know where.
Gigabyte 7n400 (pos) running @352 bus
Could be- cosair 512mb 333 XMS running a little higher? Second stick is Kingston high performance. Both running Dual Channel 3338 3.0
Value Compusa 500 watt power supply?
Using 4 system fans with a 4400rpm fan and copper heatsink on cpu. Artic silver poly.
Athlon XP 2.08 running @ 22.10 over clocked through bus x12.5. Not a big jump but runs a tad hot @ 53C

Should I:
a. Take cosair 333 out and run with 512 @ 400mhz bus. Or run ram synced instead of by spd?
b. take out extra cdroms etc to use less power, though 500 watt is a big supply.
c.shit can 7n400 cause its a pos. New CPU and board not an option right now.
Don't know where problem lies but I suspect its the borad. The onboard nic has never worked simce I got it.
Any seasoned suggestions appreciated.
 
If you are running dual channel with your mem, you will probably want your ram to be a matching pair. The difference in speed between the two might cause some data traffic issues? Your power supply is probably enough, but if it's cheap then you might be pushing it with too many components. Other than that, I would say your other hardware is probably ok.
 
I really dont care about the dual channel if my systme will perform better ill move ram. Is it better to take out slower ram and run just 512 to acheieve a higher bus speed?

Er...if you think the OC is futzing up, de-overclock it for a few days see if the problem persists. First thing I'd usually finger for an intermittant issue like that is either heat related or software related. Defragged lately?

As far as replacing parts...really, just save up some more until you can do a more significant upgrade. Might replace the PSU if you see something good in Hotdeals...there was a decent one on an Antec NeoPower recently, might still be good. Yeah so the Gigacrap isn't helping anything but you can probably limp by on it for a bit, get yourself a DFI DAGF and a Venice 3000+ a bit later.

Depending on what your memory usage is like, the extra speed may help more, or the extra capacity may help more...if you aren't using more than 512MB most of the time, then the extra won't help either way and you might as well take the slow stick out. If you need 1GB (or more...) then taking it out will likely hurt a lot more than the speed would help. Experiment with both if you're not sure.
 
yeah, i use diskkeep and defrag everytime i install something. I play games alot and thats how i noticed the problem. sometimes doom3 runs great @ 1280x1024 and sometimes not. Don't know, ill try moving ram out of dual channel.
 
Sounds a lot like it could be paging or performing an AV scan in the background, or maybe the CPU or video card is overheating...try taking the side off the case, see if it happens as much.
 
What about the whole sync vs. by spd thing? Heard a rumor that sync is better for NF2 MB
 
SPD autodetects the memory speed & timings...may not work so well with mixed memory types, you're better off setting it manually if you know how.

I doubt your memory settings are causing it, that would be a persistant state rather than an intermittant slowdown.
 
Set everything back to defaults, removed the different memory sticks out of dual channel, everything is fast as fuck. I don't get it, my 3d mark scores shot up 800 points. Go figure, tempramental Gigabyte POS.
 
Try putting them back in dual channel...might help a bit, maybe you just had a messed up setting in the BIOS. Or not...maybe the controller is going south. Gigabyte POS indeed.
