I use a ghost image to setup pc's i manage, and I am wondering if it is ok to ghost a PC with an image with the service client already loaded.
Is there a unique identifier that gets created on the manual install? Or is this an ok way to do it?

Yes, each install has a unique CPU ID. If you're running Linux, just erase the machineinfo.dat file. For Windows, recommend you install a clean intallation.

Each client has a unique ID made up from the User ID + Machine ID.
Stanford records which Work Units are sent to which Client ID.
So having more than one client with the same ID means that you could well end up working for no extra points as Stanford won't have a record of sending Work Units out to that client.

BE WARNED, IT HAS HAPPENED.

If you must clone a drive either........
Do it without F@H installed and install it later
Or.......
Delete the Work folder and all the config info before you clone the drive.
Aterwards run the config like on a new install.

Luck.............. :D

There are also deployment applications for those big corporate farms. You can check the download section at OCAU here . This is the only deployment appy that I know of.

Ciao for now .....

You can also find software utilities to reset the SID (the unique identified embedded in Windows) and that works well because I was faced with a daily need to ghost computers for our needs and a special software require a unique ID.
