Hi everyone,

I need to create a Windows 7 image with Ghost 8.3. From what I understand that isn't possible as that version of Ghost does not support this OS but unfortunately an upgrade is not an option right now and the image has to be in .gho format. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thank you!

I have used ancient versions of Ghost to make GHO files. Create a bootable floppy (DOS) or CD or USB stick with ghost32.exe on it. You can use a mouse if the system is compatible with mouse.sys or mouse.com. Boot off that floppy, CD or flash drive and run ghost32.

The problem I have encountered restoring those GHO images is the OS may not be bootable. You'll need to do a boot repair for Vista or Windows 7 using the installation media. Ancient copies of Ghost don't seem to properly back up the volume GUID, and with that mismatch the OS won't boot.

Correct me if I am wrong. But WDS is not the same thing as ghosting/imaging a system? it is for installing windows remotely or remote install for only Microsoft Produces?

It is for deploying wim files (microsoft's file based image format) over the network. I believe the latest version even includes easy driver integration that was previously only available in their larger products (I only use their enterprise tools so i dont recall).

And yes you should drop ghost and start using wims. It is a far better way to deploy systems if you are using windows only.

I've been using imagex ever since it came out, never used ghost nor acronis again.

+1 - Drop ghost and use something else.

You can capture a WIM and deploy it like ghost using the tools from the Windows Advanced Installation Kit. Create your image, "sysprep" it, then capture it. Then you can drop it on a disk, a network share -- whatever you want -- and restore it with a batch file or through a command line.
