Basically i have a spare system with junk(or not so junk) parts lying around, and was wanting to build up another gaming box with this classic, rig.

Specs.

P-3 733mhz Coppermine core
Tyan Tomcat i815T Board w/AGP 4X
Ram in the range of 382mb or 512mb(depends on what i can scrap together)
80GB WD HDD

now what im asking is what type of video card would be best suityed for this rig, so that they get along nice.

it doesnt have to play all the latest and greatest games at the highest res, but enough to play say unreal seriesd, quake series, maybe bf1942 if it can hang(doubt it) but hey, i ran bf1942 on my dual cpu celron 500mhz with a gf4 mx 420, so its possible it can run it! but yea doesnt have to be cutting edge, but something thats 'fast' for the time of the p3 733


I Have a Rage Fury Maxx, but it doesnt like the 815 chipset, and add to that it wont work in 2k/XP its kinda pointless. so i guess what im gettin at, is what video card would be decent to pair with this cpu, so the cpu wont be a bottleneck, but also so the cpu can supply the videocard with enough data to work with, so my video card isnt asking for more more more waiting for the cpu...and also so the video card isnt struggling to keep uip with the cpu where the cpu can process data quicker than the videocard...

anyhow im off to do a big of diggin around on my own and ill check back here later. right now im considering something in the range of maybe a GF2 or GF3. maybe a radeon 8500 or so too?
 
Dumpinggoods has a pretty large selection of new and refurb cards. Half-way near the bottom there's a refurbed GF4 Ti 4200 64MB for $40. If you're a little wary about that option, you should try Ebay, usually there's some Geforce3's selling for $25-30 shipped.

Only reason I'm suggesting Geforce cards is because NV's OpenGL driver is a bit friendlier to slower CPUs. Well in my experience

edit: Found This Geforce3 for $30 shipped. Not a bad price I think.

A 9600 would be a decent card for that system. Plus it gives you better Dx support than the Ti series. They are a little more than $60, but not much.
 
but will it (9600) work in this old system? i dont think its a newer agp port, i think it only works with the older agp, whats that 3.3v or something? instead of the newer 1.5v agp ports IIRC

I thought the older agp only supported 2x, I would think that a board that supports 4x agp would support a 9600.
 
im not talkin about 2x/4x/8x im talkin about the voltage for the agp port...where if u put a card that uses 1.5v into a 3.3v port, itd fry it out.....but i now see ppl have put 4200into these boards, and i checked the video card compatability list they have for this board, and it says the 4200 are ok with this board so0o0o....out i go hunting locally, if i cant find, ill ordser @ dumpinggoods.com

now i seen it says it can take a 9700....so assuming thats true it can take a 9600 also

yeah, I was referring to the volt, I don't think they made an older volted slot that supported 4x agp. But if it supports a 4200 and a 9700 than it shouldn't have a problem with a 9600.

I have played UT2K3, BF1942, Enemy Territory, etc on a 4200ti, all with good performance.
 
good to hear.

i too have played all those games, relatively decent on a gf4 mx 420, so i know itll play better on a 4200, add to that the sys i was runnin it on was a BP6 dual celron 366 oc to 500mhz...and it played, lol. so all shall be swell.

FYI, you won't be able to play BF2 with the ti 4200, I don't know if you were planning to or not. But, for all older games it will be a good purchase.
 
yup, i figured as much. but thats fine by me.

this is has been sittin on a shelf for about 5 months. it works, cuz i powered it up and it boots...ity was just collecting dust over there, and i had some trio 2d/3d stupid card i had lyin around put in to make sure it posts....then i got to thinking ill set this up as another game box and let it rot its days out while folding for the [H]orde ;)
 
Got a Visiontek GF4 Ti4200 128 in an Abit BE6 II with a P3 850, 384mb ram [pc100-133 runs at 100], XP@Home.
Been running fine for almost 2 years now. No problem with Ti4200 and the mobo. Also got an MSI GF 2 GTS Pro 64mb in an Abit BE6 P3 650, 256mb ram running W2K Pro long time
I got that running at a mild little o/c of 670mhz cpu and the GF2 @ 205/410.
I've almost finished Q2 on the 670 :)
Runs like lightning with 71.89 drivers and full AA/AF v-sync ect!
Other games I play on these oldie but goodies:

Outlaws
Revolt
Heretic II
Colin McRae 2
UT
Q3
SOF and SOF2
AOE II and expansion
HL, Blue Shift, Opposing Force etc.

The GF2 more than holds it's own and seems a perfect fit for the 670 but for $40 I'd get another Ti 4200 without hesitation.

I have most of the above games installed on both P3's and some on my 2.8c [6600GT]
Makes for some fun lan gaming .
Get a Ti and enjoy!

i just had to reply!!!

so they sent me my card and i got it today

i ordered that gf4 4200 64mb.....they sent me A FRIGGIN GF4 TI4600 128MB VIVO VERSION!@!@!!!! LEADTEK!!!!! and i only paid 50bux aftrer shipping....>AMAZING!!!! i dunno how they screwwqed that iup but they charged me 50bux and i got a damned 4600 128mb i mean its old n dated, but damn, im takin my old 4200 golden sample out of my shuttle xp 2700+_ and throwin the 4600 into it, and puttin that 4200 into my p3 733

JUST AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

AWESOME! I ordered a Radeon 9700 Non Pro from them and recieved a 9700Pro for some reason but I wasn't complaining :) (that was about a year ago.)

Sweet deal. The $50 is the total after shipping correct? That's almost as good as the $45 MSI GF4 Ti 4600 I saw a few months ago. I'm glad you got the right item or something better. I was kinda worried when I suggested them that maybe it'd be a bad suggestion on my part. *whew* (being a lesser known store and refurbed stuff)

edit: Nevermind, I missed your "$50 after shipping" statement. Tell us how it runs.

For that matter, BF2 requires a 1.5 GHz CPU just to even play. Thus, BF2 is out of the question for a 733MHz CPU.

In addition, SM 1.4 hardware support (which the GF4 series does not support) is required to play BF2.
 
By the way P3N1X[H], can your Tyan board support a Tualatin P3/Celeron? Oh wait, that board probably doesn't have any overclocking options. I was thinking maybe a tualatin Celeron 1.0A would be a nice upgrade running at 1.33Ghz. If you can manually set the FSB of the board, then a Celeron 1.0A might make a nice upgrade.
 
yea man, right on props for suggesting that place...with my uber plesant expereince, now i wont mind ordering some ram from them, and maybe a cpu upgrade for that Tyan board...yea no overclocking options for that board. which is a bummer, but ah well stability over versatility right? anyhow, thanx again for the suggestion. and well if it wont play bf2....ill force it to 1 way or another ;) and if it just plain stinkin wont work, then ah well.
 
well this is great.

the card isnt working.

i tried it in a p4pe2-x, a p4p800s-x no post, no beeps nothing...and that oldass board in a k6-2/500 and at least in the k6-2 system it gave me error beeps, and im guessing thats because its too new for that old box...when lunch hour rolls around im takin 2 co workers pcs' and goin to try plug it into there and see if that works. then when i get home tonite ill pop it into my tyan board, and try that dell optiplex too.....im hoping its just an incompatability issue, rather than a dead card...btw, one of the pins on the back is broke and its not holding the heatsink on proper, well its holding it on but of the 2 clips on the pin 1 is broke, so its held on there still....anyhow...*frustration*

My friend has a Celeron 1.0A@1.33GHz, works great. Too bad the motherboard doesn't have voltage options or it could probably run 1.5GHz stable.
