Hi all, i had an ancient system I put together from '06, still been using it (Q6600 @3.2..4gig ram and 8800GT, in a sonata III 500w case).... i didnt spend more on a PSU so its just the default 500W.... Now I'm finally done with grad school and have some free time before moving to Boston for my postdoc, I'm trying to update the GFX card.... without spending a alot on a new PSU, what are the cards i can buy (200ish or lower) that can run in my sonataIII case ?

Thx all !!

1440x900....prob CPU bound.... wondering if i should bite the bullet and just put together a new system..

with that pc there is no reason to build an all new one unless you just wanted to. really at just 1440x900 even the 8800gt is okay enough for most games IMO. maybe just get a gtx460 768mb since they are pretty cheap and plenty fast for 1680 never mind just 1440.

A 6870 would be perfect for that. Should have enough power as long as you aren't super overclocking that 6600. =)

a 6870 would be pretty silly for 1440x900. a cheaper 6850 or even cheaper gtx460 768mb would be better choices. really even a 5770 could tear through games at that res but he might as well make a bigger jump over the 8800gt.

Very true. I forgot about the whole 1440x900 thing.

thanks for the advices once again folks !! But what about the 560GTX ? they seem to cost about the same as the 460 ?

A 560 would likely be a bit overkill for that resolution. They cost about the same as what?

only if you can get a real good deal because that is really overkill for 1440x900. I would probably get the 6850 since it uses way less power and can found for pretty cheap.
