on 1600+, A7N8X, 2x256@pc2400. I O/C to about 150fsb, bringing proc rating to about 1800+ (~1.53).

Going from GF3Ti200 to the $229 Sapphire 9800pro from Newegg. I've held back on buying a card for some time now, but this deal was too good to pass up.

I've read several reviews, but I haven't seen reviews on scaled down CPU's for this card. I know I can now get at least the same framerates as my GF3, but w/ all AA and AF candy turned up with no performance price....

but what kind of raw performance gains can I expect to see on this rig with this card? -monumental or marginal?

Thanks for entertaining my giddiness.

BIG difference in performance all around. I think you will be pleased.

Depends on the games you play. I went from 4200 to 9800, and there's only two games I play online at the moment, Tribes 2 and Call of Duty.

Both games played beautifully on the 4200. In Call of Duty I can now crank up the AA to 4X, full AF, with trilinear filtering and all the eyecandy. Only a couple maps like Brecourt lag at all with these settings

In Tribes 2 I get worse framerates than I did with an old Geforce 2 GTS back in the day. And that's AFTER tweaking the shit out of my openGL prefs and reducing a number of graphic options, with no AA/AF and only in 1024x768.

Most other games I've played have run very nicely. Similar framerates as before with the 4200, but now with AA/AF cranked up, and very high visual quality settings.

Overall I'm quite pleased, except for the Tribes 2 thing which drives me nuts.

thanks for your input fellas

wow... whats the deal with openGL on these cards? i wonder if its going to be ok playing GLquake1 on quakeworld? this is the first i'm hearing about this, i'm not cancelling my order but you've definitely spurred my interest. hmmm

I don't think its that ATi cards can't run OpenGL well, its just that Tribes 2 doesn't like ATi cards. IIRC, RTCW and Enemy territory are OpenGL right? I believe ATi cards actually run those games better than the Nvidia counterparts... not 100% sure on that though.

But when I went from my GF4 to my current softmodded 9500np, my performance was increased drastically on every game I play except for tribes 2. Pretty weird how that works.

funny enough, tribes 2 always ran crappy on my system, even when i upgraded to a gf3. i know its a very system intensive game, but that is nevertheless strange. it sounds more like the developers of tribes f'd up, moreso than it being ati's fault.

and i'm not sure about wolf:et, i thought that seeing it's quake3 and all, you could designate whether or not you wanted to run on directx extensions or on opengl.... i'll have to check when i get home.
